Well i think your very lucky to catch them fish , and lovely fish at that , i hold a migratory liscence and fish for sea trout quite alot to no evail in the rivers that is , although on one of our local beaches the boats net the beach no more than 30 yds out and do quite well for seatrout and salmon , so me thinks i will be giving it a go with some small sandeels , thuso angler , do you just basically use a running ledger with a flowing trace ? , good on yer on catching them , although you will always get jealous and by the book anglers slating your catch ,maybe a migratory liscence might shut them up though , even though your on a beach a beach that belongs to no one so who is supose to give you the rights to fish it , ,,,, in my eyes theres too many rich hoyty toyty people paying big bucks to fish rivers for these very fish and they wouldnt want ordinary people like me and you catching prized fish like that , i bloody hate it , there is too much money in volved for the everyday angler to be able to fish for these fish , it makes me sick, again ,,VERY WELL DONE ........i,m not jealous though Fxxking Lucky Twxx.....:)

Just a reminder to Leon. Should he ever go mullet fishing in Mudeford harbour in Hants. An EA license is also required to fish for mullet there!!!

There are some weird anomalies about.

But the laws concerning Salmon and sea-trout have little to do with true conservation. They were originaly brought about by miffed lairds to stop the peasants nicking THEIR fish. :headhurt: Thats where the sea part got involved `cos some know alls started spouting magna carta. The lairds then declared that the beaches surrounding the estuaries of THEIR rivers were all part of the same system.

What ever. It was very naughty of you thurso to nick roags supper

And when you go up Norrie, please freeze a few for me.

We don`t use J`s anymore!!

yes a running ledger with a flowing trace is what i use 20lb main line and 10lb trace sand eel attached through the head and out the body and held on with elastic, they dont know they are hooked until half way in, then they take off for the horizion!

more to the point is how you caught these mate! what bait? what tactics? location not important to me, but there are sea trout in my area, I have seen them in my mates nets to well into double figures and faily close inshore to. So any info on how to target these fish would be nice. please!

Sam,

try float fishing the same way you would for Gars but use a thin mackerel or Herring strip about 4" long or try spinning the same bait very slowly over sandy spots at low water.

Fantastic catch Thurso Angler, my favourite fish to catch and eat (though I dont catch many ... as dont fish often for them) ... and if I had caught them they would of definitely ended up on the plate also ... enjoy! :) You are enjoying great fishing of the shore up there from the sounds of it, and since you are returning your fair share - there is no real need for anyone to moan, its the guys with the monofilament net a few miles away taking lots of them that should be getting grief regarding the law, thats doing the damage. Regarding anglers and sea trout fishing in the sea, no matter what the law says, in my eyes it is very grey, and loopholes can be found in it on either side of it, depending on what stance you take.

Regarding Roag Angler - He was a new poster on here (not someone under a different name), a sea angler and a game angler, he has fished for the Scotland boat team, holds a British record for a certain specialised species of fish, and gained the highest score ever when taking the water bailiffs exam for been a bailiff on migratory fish fisheries in Scotland - he is an extremely accomplished angler whom is known throughout Scotland in boat match fishing, shore fishing and Salmon fishing, so he knows a wee bit when it comes to sea fishing and game fishing, and could of brought a lot to this forum sadly ... and I say this fully heartedly - I wont defend him - believe me, me and him argue constantly and extremely viciously about the law and Salmon and Sea Trout fishing in Scotland on the odd occasion when I have contact with him ... and we argue/debate just about every single other thing in sea and game fishing.

With regard to his catches, he does not retain any Sea Trout or Salmon he catches (not a fish eater), and he does get a lot of them up here in Lewis, all on the fly, mostly all caught on a voluntary run Salmon and Sea Trout fishery that him and others have worked hard on restoring over the past number of years ... he catches more Salmon and Sea Trout in a season than the average game angler gets in over five years. Like the Bass and Skate anglers on here, he is extremely passionate about Salmon and Sea Trout and improving the fishing for them everywhere since they are endangered - I wont defend him (no way), and I didnt see his final post and what he said, but to play devils advocate - like some of the very out of hand stuff that we all have seen on here regarding Bass over the past year, I can only assume he said something out of line on a par with that ... we all can remember the outcry when photos of kept Bass have gone on here, and imagine what would happen if photos of knocked on the head Skate or Shark went on (even if was for consumption by the captor)......... my point is, he was just reacting to something he is extremely passionate about and actively involved in ... I may not agree with him, but thats just his opinion. As I said though, I didnt see his final posts content, so if he stepped over the line, it was no doubt justified.

Me personally, I love seen photos of catches on here, its what the place is all about - and people should feel they can post photos of fish they have caught without the fear of a backlash ... which is something we have seen all to many times, especially with Bass and some Cod photos.

Anyway, great catch Thurso - the way you described the fight is a Sea Trout fight down to a T, I bet they gave you a few nevry moments during the fight ... hope they taste great, it is in my eyes the ultimate sea fish .... pound for pound one of the best fighting fish you can hope to come across in the sea (or loch, or river) on the right gear, and definitely the best eating fish you can come across in our waters :)

Hiya,

The key to education is not jumping down someone's throat for doing something that is wrong in your eyes, but to explain why without it getting heated as to why it is not a good idea to keep the fish in question. More so when you are talking about a species where keeping them for the table is seen to be the done thing. (just look at any of the mags or TV programmes, they still don't always promote catch and release)

To be honest this thread has been blown out of proportion, OK so what if TA kept a few Trout for eating, he returns far more of them alive that he keeps. The stocks are anything but endangered, granted they are low but they are not endangered, (unlike the Common Skate)

Sea Trout are more at threat from the miles of "hobby" gill neter's that operate around our coast (it was rife in Lewis the last time I was there) and the ever increasing numbers of natural predators like Seals.

Personally I hope Roag angler chills out a bit and has his account reactivated

In my experience, those who fish for migratory trout and salmon still consider themselves as the only true anglers, a belief perpetuated by those in authority.

I heard an interesting story on the "Fisherman's Blues" radio show on TalkSport yesterday. It concerned a couple of gill netters arrested for stringing a net across a river mouth, presumably after salmon or seatrout. They had caught about a dozen mullet and bass (which are naturally regarded as an irrelevance in the story). Apparently they were seen by EA officers "on a routine patrol" and arrested with the help of a police helicopter. The EA don't have time to stop Romanians hunting carp with spearguns but they have time to carry out "routine patrols" of salmon rivers and can call on the aid of Chopper Squad when they find someone after the precious spotty fish. This despite the fact that for every £1 they get in salmon and sea trout licence money, they get £4000 off coarse fishermen!

I was happy to hear presenter Keith Arthur say what I've always believed, that the EA regard salmon so highly because if they can point to a river and say "Look, there's salmon in here, everything must be great" then the government will think they are doing a good job and keep off their backs, stuff the coarse angler who pays for it. Those who argue for a sea licence should not expect anything different.

i fish 2 hooks normal flapper rig or what ever you call them in your area , size 1 hooks baited with herring , mackerel strips, on thin tip beachcasters

the tidal run is firece here so if you get a good one great fight.

i am not a fish eater either , but my wife and kids are.

so i do keep the odd 1 or 2.

i keep records and hand them in to the local place for records on how many caught.

but those are crackers of fish you caught TA

hope to see more
