Hiya fellow anglers

I have recently immigrated from South Africa; been in the UK for about eight weeks; settled in Wigan last Saturday; and am keen to get into a bit of local fishing action!!!!!

Unfortunately I don't know anybody, don't know the fishing spots, and don't really know much about local fishing techniques.

I am however extremely happy about finding this site and am confident that things will progress from here (after all, fishing is a universal language right?).

I have traditionally been a sea angler and have recently started trying my hand at fly fishing but am happy to get involved in any form of angling so long as it involves a rod and reel.

I have my own transport and tackle and would hope to hear from guys in the area that wouldn't mind showing me the ropes and possibly allow me to tag along on outings.

I have already purchased my fishing license and am rearing to go.................

Fishing Is Not A Matter Of Life And Death,........ It's more important than that!!!!!

Welcome to AN.

Can't help with "Wigan area" local knowledge, but there are those on here that can.

Which part of South Africa are you from ? We have fished parts of the coast from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth

We are off to Namibia soon for sea fishing, and tigerfish in Botswana.

Welcome to AN

I would think the best thing to do is find a local tackle shop, make yourself known to the them, tell them what you told us, they will probably introduce you to local anglers who may offer to meet up with you on a water near you, you can't beat socializing.

Hope all goes well for you.

Welcome to AN.

As for the local area, try the tackle section of the outdoor superstore by Wigan railway station, or North West Angling Centre in Chapel Street in Hindley, just outside Wigan. there are a few guys - especially in NWAC who can put you on some of the best places around. One of the guys, Frank at NWAC, has probably forgotten more than most people are likely to know - and he's a nice guy to boot.

Near to you is Pennington Flash which has a reputation for pike, bream, carp and roach - and offers the option of a variety of styles to try. The canals in the Wigan area are good 'banker' palces to catch and to get a feel for coarse fishing, there are endless commercial fisheries in the area to cut your teeth on.

Good luck.

Alan

Cheers Allan

I am staying in Hindley specifically and have seen both the outdoor and NWAC stores. I have been meaning to pop in but, as I only moved here a week ago, have not yet had a chance to - will see if I can get there tomorrow.

Thanx guys, it seams that angling is an international language after all.
