I wouldn't buy any of them. The only one I imagine is worth eating is cod and I'm not going to eat that until I start catching them again!

The only "freshwater" fish I've eaten are pike, perch, trout and salmon and, while they are edible, I'd prefer almost any seafish to any of them.

Am I right in thinking barbel is poisionous to eat while it's in the fishes breeding condition?

None of the above. If you had haddock and perch on there it would be a different story. I would'nt eat bass iether, vastly overrated IMHO.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

The very earliest writers said that you shouldn't eat barbel - would love to know if there's any truth in it though - does Bruno still post here?

This is what Dame Juliana Berners wrote in 1496 in The Treatise of Fishing with an Angle...

"The barbel is a sweet fish, but it is a queasy food and a dangerous one for man's body. For commonly, he introduces the fevers. And if he is eaten raw, he may be the cause of a man's death: which often has been seen."

And Isaac walton had this...

yet he is not

accounted the best fish to eat, neither for his wholesomeness nor his

taste; but the male is reputed much better than the female, whose spawn

is very hurtful,

Never seen any modern substantiation of this however....
