I have a 13ft Daiwa Harrier waggler rod and wondered if it would be suitbale for pike fishing as I fancy a go at that ? Never tried pike fishing and understand that it would mean using lures etc but thats as much as I know about it. Also the rod has no test curve on it so has anyone an idea what it might be ?

No, a carp waggler rod is designed for casting a float, it would struggle to cast anything other than a very small lure, and would probably make a nice "crack" sound if you tried to cast a deadbait with it!

Pike fishing is the one branch of the sport where you do *really* need the right gear, and preferably a bit of practical instruction from someone who does know what they are doing.

The Wychwood Rogue Pike range is worth a gander. I have 2 now and highly rate them both. You can get them now for about 30-35 quid.

I found a DAM match rod floating in Earlswood a couple of years ago and used it for 18 months flinging out half herrings (often as far as I could launch em!!!) until I eventually broke it (I actually trod on the end and broke off the end eye).

For sure there are rods better suited to the job but if the rod is an old one and you dont mind tooooo much if you break it then why not use it?

Of course playing a double figure summer pike on a 13 foot match rod is good fun and beats playing it on a piece of broom stale!!!! :):)

It's good practice to use strong gear to land pike as quickly as possible, particularly in warm water conditions where oxygen levels are low.

Playing them to exhaustion on light gear, is not a good idea and may quickly result in the collapse of quality pike stocks on a fishery.

Pike gear dosen't have to be very specialised, but if you give a toss about future sport, it needs to be strong.

Have a look at the PAC website, the link below talks about rods etc:

you can catch any fish on really any rod but in the past the chances of being successful have been improved ,rods just used to be called rods untill rods more suited for their use were made.

the chances of catching and landing are improved using the suitable rod and ofcourse the correct kit for landing and care must be fore-most in your eye.

so the tackle from reel to hook and fish to bank need to be in the equasion ,its pointless putting on 15lb line on a match rod and reel one will give and pointless putting 2lb line on a big pit and 3lb broom handle for the same reason ,balance is good.

its also pointless playing your fish carefully then trying to cram it in a tiny net then letting it roll around on the bank trying to unhook it etc.

It is to be observed that 'angling' is the name given to fishing by people who can't fish.

If GOD had NOT meant us to go fishing, WHY did he give us arms then??

(If you can't help out someone in need then don't bother my old Dad always said! My grandma put it a LITTLE more, well different! It's like peeing yourself in a black pair of pants she said! It gives you a LOVELY warm feeling but no-one really notices!))
