Heard all this type of sidestepping before, in that 'previous life'. We will see?

We have all ready had one basin full of 'I dont agree, my picture was . . . '. Need to all be using the same engine, then its down to skill, "photographers eye", thats the thinking man/womans way to be tops. Two formats? and 'covert' one back to comply, thats wrong, :o The comp has improved many members ability in a short time, thats the positive. Negative is we are not on a level playing field or using the lowest practical common denominator and its going to raise its head again??

RAW should be reserved for those specialist post, 'members efforts at RAW, comments and help please'? Even a RAW only competition?

John, you will find the pointy ear transplant invaluable. Allows you to use the camera 'spectical conversion' eliminates the need for a tripod, the camera sits on a specially adapted 'spectical frame' just in front of the eyes, lining up with the eye piece, The pointy ears are perfect to clip the side arms to with a couple of bulldog clips. Captain Kirk and Mr Spock have patients on this item so pleas do not try to copy it. They will set the Klingon heavies on to you. :drunk:

There is no sidestepping by me and just who is uing RAW here? Last time I used it was at a wedding 18th March, but then I knew I was going to need large prints and that I would be editing for effects such as soft focus and sepia.

I know Jaybee shot in RAW but I honestly dont know anyone else here who shoots in RAW. And as your own tests have shown there is no descernable difference between the two photographs one shot in RAW the other in JPEG, and even if there was, you certainly wont see it at 800 pixels long 300kb file size. I think that safely lays the RAW vs JPEG issue to rest, if we where entering shots @ 6MB size, then that would be a different issue altogether.

Yes we are all at different levels, thought I had gone over that in my last post.

We have had shots from mobile phone cameras in the final three and we have had high end DSLR's with good glass attached shooting RAW as entries to the challenge, both failed to win...seems pretty level to me on that basis.

Steve, Level at the moment . . . now? So therefor, before it does, while we are all using JPEG lets keep it that way? As I said in my PM, the subject did not arise before . . . ? But it has raised the idea, possibility, in my mind? Perhaps I am a 'suspicious old git', join the 'grumpy old men' you say? lol

Thats all I am thinking, wont change my way of doing things at the present, lol I am however grateful that I feel my picture taking now gives me personally more satisfaction. The 'chance' factor has be exchanged for structure, at least I know why they are often crap now,:lol: This is all thanks to AN Photographic Forum and its members.

All cameras take photos in RAW, its how the camera saves it thats relevant, some choose to save it as RAW others compress it to JPEG. A shot taken in RAW needs to be converted to another format to be viewed or printed, primarily you have the choice on various settings and how you want to use the RAW file, for example you can choose which whitebalance setting you want. This is the main difference between RAW and jpeg, jpeg has the camera settings saved already and RAW allows you to set them. Therefore a RAW file has to be converted to jpeg for web use, and will therefore be no different than if it had been taken as a jpeg.

Its my opinion that the difference betwen the two formats only comes into play when the filesize is at the other end of the scale, ie MB's as opposed to KB's. In the scenario of our challenge here RAW or jpeg pictures make not a jot of difference, so you should not let it play on your mind.

Now then, back to the challenge rules discussion. :D

Love the new 800px size limit, just have to learn how to make my file size smaller but all info is available so will work on it before I post my next entry. Have never even sharpened a photo, only ever cropped. Personally I prefer to keep it as simple as possible, no file size limit, no 'spruking' allowed at all other than cropping, and not having to list that other stuff which I know nothing about, but thats just me being stupid and lazy. Am happy to try my best to conform to the new rules.

Cheers,

Tracy
