expensive fishing gear

Angling is one of those sports where having better gear won't mean catching more fish - most times.

However the better gear will be more versatile. For instance, a better rod may have superior design and/or be made from better quality carbon. This may allow you to cast further, and this will sometimes mean you catch whilst others are blanking.

Note that I've said better gear rather than more expensive gear. The two don't always go together!

On many waters though, especially commercials, there's no need to cast far - in fact on a lot there isn't enough water to do so anyway! Here an expensive rod would to a large extent be wasted.

On the other hand, if you're fishing in a match or on a very difficult water where fish are few and far between, then the loss of just one fish could make a big difference. In these situations top quality gear would be the choice of many.

Having the right tackle is just one of the factors in becoming a good angler though. It's certainly the easiest to get right. However other factors, especially location and feeding, are even more important, and I'd spend all the time you can learning how to get these right.

If you do so you'll catch more than many anglers who've got more expensive tackle than you! :)

I'm really glad I sat and read this thread as I thought I would be in a very small minority of people who use cheaper kit.

My most expensive bit of kit are my bite alarms at #40 I have 2 second hand rods and 2 cheap Argos baitrunner style reels, and I agree that what actually gfoes under the water is the most important peice of tackle(Good bait and Terminal tackle).

I'd like to thank everyone for the info on this thread as it has made me feel a lot more confident about going to a lake with my budget kit.
