Why bother using mono anyway for piking?...good wire seems to have little adverse effect on lure action or bait presentation especially the 49 strand stuff, no reason not to use it.

Neil no one is sugesting using it.Barry simply wondered why we use wire when you can catch toothy critters like conger, ling, tope etc on heavy mono.

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

Pike & Predators - what an interesting name. It implies that a pike is not a pred.

Hi Newt, it started off as a low circulation specialist pike magazine. As it expanded it added predators to its title in an effort to pull in more readers. Have a read of the comments re circle hooks here:

Some of the replies and ideas on this thread have made me wince, particularly the idea of big singles of circles/ bananas or whatever bloody shape they are..... As Budgie says its a cop out for not handling fish correctly

Is this the considered response from the PAC? Mark if you are going to post under your own name you should understand every post you make reflects (either positively or negatively) on the views of the PAC. This particular one has done the PAC no favours...

I'd say experienced anglers thinking hard about their angling methods is a good thing. Methods move forward and become confined to history e.g. gaffs and knotted nets etc.

Circle hooks are very good for species that have a tendency to swallow baits. I don't believe it is a cop out for handling. Why anyone would prefer to have deep hooked fish (and all the trouble that goes with that) I don't know. It kind of makes me think of seatbelts or crash helmets and the mentality that REAL men don't need them. Well if its all the same to you I'd prefer to be safe than sorry.

I'd accept that jury is still out on their use for pike. Hats off to Budgie for trying them out and experimenting. Dismissing them in such a condescending manner reflects badly on you and badly on the PAC. It was my understanding the PAC was supposed to champion pike conservation and wellfare. With respect, I think with your comments here and Leons experiences of pike with traces attached you aren't doing a very good job.
