Testing a Sky dish setup

GlennB

Recommended Posts

A few weeks ago the LNB on our Sky dish took a whack from something hard in high winds.

It stopped working, I got a new LNB fitted, all was OK.

In the recent winds it's stopped working again, with absolutely no signs of damage though.

I've twiddled the screw connector, but no joy.

Just shoving in another LNB seems daft, so can any one recommend a signal tester (or whatever) so I can check the various components to see where a fault might lie?

Cheap would be good ;)

Cheers all, and here's wishing youse all a brilliant New Year !

Isn't there one built into tour reciever ?

I think it's in the services or system set up menus.

Nowhere near the telly at the moment but I'll have a look before I go out.

With you saying it was fine before the winds and something hit it , chances are that your dish has moved or even been warped mate

stand underneath it and see if it is squred up on all four corners( sounds daft i know) , but imagine it to be square

or the lnb arm may have dropped

see this problem pretty often after a gale or even kids with footballs etc

to see what sigan you are receiving just press the services button, then 4 then 6

to access the installer menu it's Services 4 0 1 select (quite quickly)

If you have a signal and a lock indicator you should be ok.

dont forget that you are focusing the dish on something the size of a mini cooper out in space

Did you fit it yourself , or did you pay for it doing?

Cobra.....the company that looks after sky's installations are absolute rubbish. I've seen some pathetic attempts at installs by them , even leaving the elevation nuts un-tightened for starters , set on wrong satellite , wrong skew setting , not switching rf2 back on (magic eye)

The Signal strength bar is about 60% grey

The signal quality bar is totally blue

The Lock status is "OK"

The dish looks square and is very solidly locked in place

is the connection waterproof? or has it just had a bit of tape wrapped around it?

My guess would be some water ingress - fairly common, others may differ

The brass nut connector into the LNB?

That had some double gooey tape wrapped round it.

Water in the cable? Could take some drying out now, cos I took the tape off to twiddle the nut ;)

not sure if the sky box has a lnb short function but check that a strand of the copper sheathing isnt touching the inner core.

if you have a good signal try a search for new channels ,it should have gone through the channel finding sequence if it was switched of from the mains then back on when you renewed the lnb.

check also its pointing at astra 28e not another sattelite (very easily done as they are very close in dish movement degrees) you will get a good signal and lock on say 19degrees e but the sky box is too stupid to tell you that.

water is the killer and use self amalgamating tape not electricians tape to seal the f connector at the lnb.

If the wire were to be "shorted" it would immediately come up "no satellite signal"

Have you tried resetting the box , or a "forced download"?

Chances are that the box has glitched
