I've just got a Nash Venom rod that retails at about £100 - http://www.nashtackle.com/ - if he can do better, I'd be impressed :)

I used to build rods myself and it's all about satisfaction with a job well done. Cost doesn't really enter into it to be honest. But with all the Chinese can do now!!!! Didn't have that in MY DAY!!!!

It is to be observed that 'angling' is the name given to fishing by people who can't fish.

If GOD had NOT meant us to go fishing, WHY did he give us arms then??

(If you can't help out someone in need then don't bother my old Dad always said! My grandma put it a LITTLE more, well different! It's like peeing yourself in a black pair of pants she said! It gives you a LOVELY warm feeling but no-one really notices!))

I build all my own rods and you can get a much better quality rod for the money by building your own. It might not be so pretty / gaudy / flashy as a store bought but there is every chance the components will be better.

Don't know much about feeder rods but I would be surprised if the components cost him as much as 100 quid assuming he is using Fuji guides, reel seat etc. He may be limited in his choice of blanks. I buy all of my fly blanks in the States, probably half the price of blanks here. Having said that, if he uses a Harrison blank it may cost a bit more but it will be massively better than anything the Chines are building on. It is also an fascinating hobby in its own right, great for those winter days when you can't get out fishing.

Lastly, catching a fish on a rod you have put together yourself is very satisfying.

I would say build, no argument.

Just had some coloured EVA grips delivered from Mudhole last Thursday.

Merlino Bill Oi Oi yourself. If your mate is keen and wants to practice a bit I can send him down some thread, old guides I`ve stripped off rods and a spare bit of blank or two to let him get his hand in.

yes Newt

I buy quite a lot from Mud hole, in fact a few weeks ago I put a link to Mud hole on the fly Fishing section because they were having a sale of an overstock first quality blank. The srp of the blank was in the region of 250USD and they were selling them for 50 USD.

fantastic blanks, I bought 6 and I wish I had bought a few more whilst I was at it.

I actually broke one of the tip sections after I had finished the rod. The blanks were all sold out and I didn't hold out much hope, but Mudhole replaced FOC with no questions or arguments.

If you like spinning or casting rods check out some of the very smart wood insert reel seats

I have just used one on a lightweight spinning rod and it looks the canine's cojones :D

Yep, like to see that John. You can do all sorts of inserts and designs if you`ve got the patience and decent cutting gear. These were just plain powder blue to go on a blue trolling 20lb with silver / blue Batson butts and CWDSG fujis. Good job the customers a fishing buddy, god knows what the thread wrap will be, he`s offshore just now. Lemon or pink knowing him, he spotted rod builder.org once and that was it. Yellow checked jacket and blue trousers for the golf next with pink shirt and tartan cap no doubt. :yucky: :yucky: :yucky:

(sorry Newt but they can be a tad gaudy in the "inner temple" )
