That sounds very interesting!

Where can I order the book - hopefully in future?

Hopefully within the next few months almost all of the work is done now, it is just a matter of tidying it up.

Is it the Walker biography from medlarpress.com ?

No, I believe that is the one by Barry Rickards. The book I am doing is a compilation of experiences that a number of people had with Dick at some time in their lives. The publisher of mine will be Watermeadow Books.

And what's about A.J. Rudd? Clifford says that Rudd adds the swivel to a paternoster lead, which was still in use in 1935 for decades. I read the book three times - but there is no lead with a swivel in it!? Knows somebody the book?

Maybe Mr clifford was just talking (or in this case writting) ******? Carp writers have been known to do this from time to time you know!

Why not contact him to find out?

I'am doing some research about the invention of the arlesey bomb. I know, that Richard Walker is not the first Angler who "invents" the pearshaped lead with a swivel. In 1977 Walker admits in "Succesful Angling" that he only reinvents the Arlesey Bomb.

I've read (Clifford, History of carp fishing), that the idea of the swivel came from A.J. Rudd, who suggested it in 1935 in his book Coarse Fishing. Now I own and read the book of A.J. Read - but there is now lead with a swivel. He fished only with drilled bullets... :yucky:

Can anybody help me!?

Hi, this is Sea Eagle and I just registered as I found this post. I don't know how to reply to a post as I am new to this. (no send button like email and no box for text or any submit reply button!!) so I will try to write here.

However, I do know who invented, or rather developed and made, the first Arlesey Bomb and I still have one of several prototypes. This was made by my father who was a close friend and fishing companion of Dick Walker after the War, when he was editor of the Angling Times. He took the photos of Dick with Clarissa in Sept 52 and also my brother aged three holding Clarissa in his lap, which appeared in the Angling Times. I won't give full details re Arlesey here as I don't kow if I am wasting my time typing in this question panel. I will try this and click on Add Reply. I don't know if I am allowed to post an email address or not.

If I am, my email is life.force @ fsmail.net. If Horrocks is still around and is interested in the subject, please get in touch. The rest of you please respect site protocol re spam emails and don't send me any unrelated emails.

Thanks and a great summer to all, Sea Eagle.

Hi Sea Eagle and welcome to AnglersNet. You will get used to the layout very quickly.

I put a couple of spaces in your email address which will mostly prevent the search bots that crawl all forums from being able to harvest it for spammers. People reading your post can simply take the spaces out to send you email.

If you have problems with anyone from this forum, just let me (or any staff members) know and we will deal with them.

I certainly remember the writings of RW re the big perch at Arlesley. He got quite a few 3lbers I seem to remember.

Fished at depths of 60ft and found that an ordinary lead (no swivel) often tangled "on the drop", so tried including a swivel.

Charlie Stone (look him up in the list of early big carp "History of Carp angling" ) and myself had a look at Arlesley, seem to remember bare banks....newly dug?

Can't help as to whether he actually "invented" them or not, though he certainly set the production lines humming :) Arlesley bombs became essential kit for all specimen hunters of the time :)

i have a couple of alcocks? spiral leads somewhere with swivels definately pre war so putting one in a bomb is an adaption rather than an invention if indeed (the advertising wasnt so easy back then) some one else already had adapted a bomb the same way for personal use ,or indeed fastening a swivell to a bomb with a split ring was commonplace i'm sure.

its modern fairey tales like jaques custard invent the scuba setup when indeed it was invented decades before by someone else all he did was make a refined version or thomas crapper invented the flushing loo etc
