first seat box

it depends on what fishing your up to ,for just basic tackle carrying then the shakespear box (or the many clones) are good enough ,almost impossible to break but limited in their design most being no more than a simple plastic box with lid thats waterproof.

i have a shakespear in the loft and a similar one with built in trays both now too big for my type of fishing and i have a small seatbox with drawers that hold the minimum tackle i take now.

you can buy (or could?) a galaxi box which fitted in the top of the shakespear box to hold most of your tackle leaving the base for reels and other larger bits but buying both is almost as expensive as buying a budget seatbox with drawers anyway

The smaller of the two Shakespeare blue plastic tackle boxes is dead handy, ideal for storage if and when you move onto greater things. But, personally, over the last year or so I have reverted to my aged Efgeeco metal framed, canvas covered seat box. Nothing to do with nostalgia, just practical and efficient, and nothing better for my needs on the market.

i used to have a packa seat for river roaming excellent bit of kit once a couple of bolts were added ,untill then it was a packa slide on some banks ,the bolts stuck in the bank as an anchor.cant remember what i did with it though .

but I am now looking at obtaining a seat box, can anyone suggest a good seat box for a newbie

I have a cheap Keenets box with is ok, but I'm starting to find its not high enough and can leave you with back problems.

My advice is to find a Tackle shop that has a variety in stock and test them for comfort. As they're a bulky item they quite often go cheaper on Ebay as a 'pick up only' item.

Hi Jace,

I agree that the Shakespeare seatbox takes some beating, robust, cheap and lasts for years, mine has two trays that clip on the sides of the box at the top and these hold all my ready-use tackle and bait, inside the box are larger items, spare reels, groundbait etc. You don't really need drawers in a seatbox, all my tackle is in a plastic cantilever tool box inside my Shakespeare box. Another good point is that I have easily fixed all my Octoplus kit to my box, the permutations with Octoplus are endless. Downside is that that the box is clumsy to carry about if you don't have a tackle trolley.

I agree with this. Personally, I have an old Sundridge box. Cheap as chips and really handy for doing what it should, hold tackle. I then have a Fox Stalker chair with adjustable legs which is fantastic and so I can get comfortable anywhere and anywhere. I appreciate that fishing with a pole is much easier when sat on a seat box but it also worries me when I see line after line of angler on a bank and they are all bent over whilst sat on a box, very bad posture for the back and not good in the long run. I think the practicalities of having a box that you can sit on are good but a seat I can recline, stretch and relax on outweigh the benefits. Also, I often dont take my box at all and simply take what I need for the day in my carryall and just take the seat.

Just my two peneth. :D

Jace, think ahead, you may well end up with a trolley, so the Shaky box will be ideal. Add the Octuplus legs and you can cope with any bank situation (even in water)

Hi All,

Many thanks over the last few weeks getting me up and running. but I am now looking at obtaining a seat box, can anyone suggest a good seat box for a newbie

many thanks Jace

A friend of mine has an ASI seatbox up for grabbs at the moment. I've just put it on the sale/auction section on AN.

The box is a corker and far superior to many boxes, it's got drawers, adjustable legs etc and even has it's own ground bait bowl underneath and I would imagine he would sell it for less than you could go and but a new bog standard shakespear. The only prob is with an item as heavy and bulky as a seatbox is if you can't pick it up or are too far away for him to dropp it off then the post would be expensive.
