...and you think WE have rain ?

Just had an email from Daughter No 1 in Lago Vista, Texas.

They had an inch of rain last night, but only twenty miles away, in Marble Falls, they had EIGHTEEN INCHES of rain during the night.

Puts the four inches in Yorkshire in perspective.

....but then, everything in Texas is always more and/or bigger

It is to be observed that 'angling' is the name given to fishing by people who can't fish.

If GOD had NOT meant us to go fishing, WHY did he give us arms then??

(If you can't help out someone in need then don't bother my old Dad always said! My grandma put it a LITTLE more, well different! It's like peeing yourself in a black pair of pants she said! It gives you a LOVELY warm feeling but no-one really notices!))

Nah thats not rain, Fac-Fac on La Reunion island once received 72 INCHES of rain in a 24 hour period thats 6 FEET

and Cherrapunji in india once got 1042 INCHES in a year thats 86 FEET 10 INCHES, now thats what i call rain. what we've had is just mildly moist by comparison.

Funny you should mention that, Certhia and I were at Cherrapunji in April - it rained only six drops!

Mind you, I could see why it might be wet - a huge escarpment, 2000 ft high, overlooking the border into Bangladesh - which is absolutely flat all the way to the Bay of Bengal. The escarpment is the first high ground the monsoon reaches on its way in from the sea.

I'll see if I can find Certhia's report

yes, here it is

The final few days were spent in the hills above the town of Shillong and driving up to the waterfalls at Cherrapunjee, the "wettest place on planet Earth" – 17ft of rain per year, but only a few drops while we were there. A Brown Bush Warbler stole the show amongst a strange moorland landscape scattered with open cast coal workings and small chapels.

Reminds me of the time when I was working for the Main Roads Dept, Western Australia........which is a bit bigger than Texas.

We had just finished a 40 km section of earthworks on the new road section 150 km south of Broome, at the edge of the Great Sandy Desert. The bitumen had been down less than a month and a cyclone decided to sit over the area, resulting in 1016 mm, or 40 inches of rain in 21 hours. The whole section was ultimately washed away. That 40 inches was 8 year's rainfall.

I wonder how many of those who lost their lives during this rainy period are worthy of a darwin award, you know the ones that think "ooh i know i'll drive my car through a ford thats normally 6 inches deep but now is a 5 foot deep raging torrent" or " i know the road has disappeared beneath 3 feet of fast flowing water nows the time i'll go for a stroll to see how my neighbours are or deliver the papers".at least a couple i would suspect.

No, they didn't, but they did rescue and give house room to some victims of the Katrina hurricane at the time - as did many other decent people. Didn't expect medals for it, but didn't expect snide remarks either.
