Boat Fishing Monthly - July 2005 issue

I agree with Phil Williams from the article that there has to be another way to accept records for fish

The trouble with formulas especially regarding the Tope is they seem more inaccurate the bigger the fish.

The first fish was weighed at 65 pounds.

The second fish was sized by giving the measurements to Sue and Jeri Drake who ran the UK shark tagging. They made it out to be 75 pounds. The new formula from the Southamton university puts the fish at 104 pounds, which is way over the top. Looking at the pictures there has to be more than 10 pounds difference.

I am not one for records as they are fairly meaningless and will not kill a fish to claim one, but i do feel a fish has to be weighed to give it any credence, mainly to avoid dishonesty. No names mentioned. I know of four tope that have beaten the British records and guess a new record will never be claimed by a charter skipper.

If an angler gets a 80 plus Tope or 220 plus Skate then the enjoyment of catching the fish should be enough.

Just opened Julys issue to see myself on page 26 with the Undulate Ray I caught back in May, the skipper must have sent it in. Although my name is actually Scott Turner, not Andrew Scott, and I was using a new Abu rod, not a Penn setup.

But a nice surprise anyway!!! That makes Seven
