08719 Phone Number Scam

Elton

Recommended Posts

I got a call today from 08719511095. In fact, I've had a few from 08719 numbers over the past couple of years.

They just ring once and hang up, the idea being that you then call back and get stung for a small fortune. Even worse than that are the numbers beginning 090.

Good job I'm a miserable git who never returns calls anyway, really ;)

you can get a bar on your phone to stop the less clever calling 0900 numbers ,hopefully it will extend to 0800 numbers as well ,some are free but many as you say are almost premium lines.the trouble is the phone companies make a great deal of money having their cut on them

trouble is we have number ID or whatever its called and a mrs whose memory of my warnings is shredded at every fit ,i just wish i could get her to understand central heating thermostats (can any) we might then have the money to phone them :D

i only rarely use the phone (once or twice a year) and answer it less ,if its important they will phone back and keep phoning back untill the mrs answers it!

my mrs on the other hand is rarely off it ,if it rings and my mrs hands it to me its family or i put it down for her.

if strangers want to speak to me they should make an appointment by mail first !

Yep, a big pet hate of mine at the moment is all the big companies using 0845 or 0870/1 numbers (the real swizz here is 0870 numbers cost 12p from a mobile but 0871 prefixes cost 35p per minute).

Why when my broadband supplier for example messes up the bill do I have to pay to tell them???

Fortunately there is a way around this.......0845 numbers don't work from overseas so the companies must have an alternate geographical number for overseas customers to use. These can be found at www.saynoto0870.com

The saynoto0870 site is brilliant! In fact we probably use it once a week as the tariff we're on with BT gives us free calls 24/7 but not to 0870 or 0845 numbers.

We too use Phil's idea, but a few months ago I phoned one firm's overseas number (I can't remember the company now) only to be told on a recorded message that it had detected we were calling from the UK and wouldn't connect us!

What particularly annoys me though is that companies expect us us dial 0870 numbers (for which they get paid) just to enquire about their products! If they've a competitor with a similar product then they risk losing business. They must feel that either the phone income makes up for this. Or that potential customers are naive. Which is probably correct!

0870 numbers are charged at national rate, so I'm not sure what the problem there is.

When I used them, I didn't receive a single penny whatsoever.

The only reason I had them was because I could choose two consecutive numbers, which looked nicer on stationery, and because it made my business geographically non-specific, which made sense for a website.

I believe there was a changeover period after which the rules were going to amended to protect consumers. I may be wrong, but I don't think the end of the changeover period has been reached yet. There's probably more details on the OFCOM site.
