Catching a ruffe !

Use red maggots or small worms. They are very similar to perch as habitat goes. Look for the sort of swims where you would expect perch and its very likely you will catch ruffe.

 i caught one on the thames the other day that was an inch long i foul hooked it it one of its fins! i had a half pound perch in my keep net that ate it while it was in the keep net. i was a bit peed off, as it would have made a nice specimen for my aquarium!

Had to catch a ruffe for a species hunt I was involved with in 2007.

Have caught hordes by accident whilst fishing for something else, but soon realised I knew nothing about how to catch a ruffe by design. Made several trips to former "hotspots" but no ruffe there now.

As with so many "elusive" species, location was the key - the actual catching was easy. Eventually found a spot on the middle Medway where a quarter-inch piece of lobworm on the bottom produced a ruffe a chuck.

Are you still after one, Mat?

If you are, you are more than welcome to come out for an afternoon's / evening's fishing with me to bag one. The 'top secret' location is in Essex, and not to far from you. ;)

PS. The ground rules are that once you've caught one, you put him on a size six Super Specialist and bag yourself a Perch over 2.5lb. :D The sub 2lb'ers won't touch a Ruffe.

Hmmm that sounds really interesting!

Was off to the Warren tomorrow for one last go at the tench, but I might change my mind :)
