Kayak fishing rod

Could someone please explain to a beginner why rods designed for kayaks are so short?

I've been using a 7 foot boat rod and see no problems with it.

Is this simply to bring the fish closer to you?

Because they are designed by people who aren't kayak anglers.

 

7ft is about right in my opinion.

Mine is about 7 foot too.It just about clears the bow of the kayak .A rod any shorter,I would have problems with I think.

Shortest one i use is a 6' 6" xtc jerkbait but i wouldn't go any shorter as i can't really see any advantage in doing so.

If I was to design a rod for kayak fishing it would have a tip eye of the roller sort for use with multipliers and the butt would be shortened. I buy rods and cut the butts off straight away - I don't have space for a long butt and don't want to lean too far forward to take it out of a rod holder.

Yes 7 foot is not a bad size for a boat rod. I use the fladen maximus 10-20. My spinning rod is 9 foot and does the job just fone.

Anything between 7 and 8 foot is ideal. But having said that, some of the shorter rods can be real fun with a loaded line of mackeral
