Phone 751
All, I believe my most consistent practice with bridge piers is, I never fished the backside if it was sunny. When the back or the left or right side were in the shade I still found them to be just average. I too always think it is a "fishy" looking environment only to be dissapointed. Phone 751
Chesters1, Probably the number one reason I could not maintain an interest in fluff chucking was gold. As soon as I would see a few flakes the 'ell with the fish rod and out would come the pan. My best ever about 1/2 oz - 50 years ago Phone

Phone 751
You are built taylor made for a winter in Arizona. Sunny - 65 70 f and well suited to searching for nuggets with a detector. In fact, the rage is using detectors that that also hit on iron, but lookin for gold. I have to tell you there are 10 for every ONE I saw in 1964. I haven't been back in probably 20 yrs so I really don't know. Still, there are millions of acres that are virgin Phone
chesters1 1587
All detectors hit on iron the frequency overlaps so if you blank out iron you blank out small gold ,bigger gold appears as foil so if you want gold you dig everything . Over here our pennies are now clad (iron core with a copper coating) once they rust the give the perfect gold response so if your finding them your not missing gold ,but natural gold is a rare thing so if you want to find gold thats not a ring you dig everything, rings even iron ones give a far different signal to what they are made of so are rarely missed but a lot come up in the ring pull section so you have to dig those aswell! 1 month in one field ,just the rubbish where gold could have been ! https://www.dropbox.com/s/zkgmygshl9u37ls/IMG_20170823_133231.jpg?dl=0 Plenty of coins inc 320 round pounds but just one gold earing ,now elaborate over 6 months and the gokd total was 14 grms of 21/22 ct ,time wise i was probably down if i was working! 50 odd silver rings but asian ones are not 925 so pretty worthless ,i give them back who needs a cheap ring with Alah rules or whatever on them From non existant fish to saphires to gold then coke cans another convoluted AN thread! The Flying Tench 43
Thanks, Gozzer. Yes, helpful, though for the particular bridge I have in mind I don't have a permit to fish from the upstream side of the bridge. But I'll bear it in mind for elsewhere. The Flying Tench 43
Thanks for heads up, Steve, but no, the bridge in question is Clifton Hampden, near Didcot. I've been fishing a short day ticket stretch a few times, though with little success beyond an 8oz roach and a jack. john clarke
