I've Never Believed In Them - But!!!

We have a heavy, thick rug which we keep snugged up to the edge of base of the hearth but almost every next day, the rug is almost 2 inches away from it. It's been happening for weeks on end. The wife & I have both noticed this phenomenon & are at a loss as to the cause!! The gap is pretty well the same along its length, as though the rug has been pulled away from the hearth & we have no reason to walk over it!!

No "Who Ya Gonna Call" jokes please.

Shrinkage of the inner felt or foam mat caused when the fire goes out?

It's a fake fire (fan heater) which is never on.

Your carpet has "tufts" that don't stand straight up - they will mostly point in a specific direction. When your rug is on top of the carpet, any movement, including the floor flexing as you walk by, will slowly ratchet the rug in the direction that the tufts are facing.

You get the same effect if you push down on a toothbrush until the bristles squidge in one direction, and then push up and down on it.

We're talking 4 inch over 2 days away from the hearth edge now!!

We find it really quite amusing & puzzling just now.
