Price = Performance??????

Guys, a post to save some of you a few quid. I have over the years had the opportunity to cast and fish with more rods than i care to remember. Recently i have used some of the cheaper rods available at around the £100 mark. I found most of the rods to be very capable and very well up to the job, a simple fishing pendulum putting around 180yds between me and the lead (lead only) I have been brainwashed in the past to thinking that the only rods able to perform on the beach had to be british made and end in LEX. So to summarise dont be put off by the price tag on some rods, as even some of the cheaper ones are very capable, you neednt spend £280+ for a british rod to get the performance you need. Im not running them down, far from it, indeed i own 8 LEX rods myself. Its just a case of economics, same as not needing to buy an aston for performance only as a nissan skyline does the same, just allot cheaper. Regards Ryan.

is this bloke real :confused:

" i have used some of the cheaper rods available at around the £100 mark."

i have never paid more than £40 for a rod not all people have the benifits of that much money ,perhaps he would like to send me a few of his cheapies so i can benefit too :( the only "named" rod i posses is a long retired vortex :(

for all the money spent nowadays the distance acheived is no more than 40 years ago the only change is that more people can do it just as a modern car is just as powefull as most racing cars of that period but in difference they are cheaper rather than more expensive unlike rods :confused:

its all i can afford a £100 rod to me is a tournament version containing bell AND whistles and casts itself ,my crap daiwa longbeam (by your standards) will have to last till i die ,having never broken a rod i cannot see a reason to buy another (although i havent played with my silstar £12.50 14 footer yet) :D my last rod a DAM fiberglass one couldn't take modern reels so also has gone into retirement hence me splashing out on the daiwa

CI, i would definatly agree I've got a Daiwa sandstorm and a conoflex nemesis and although the conoflex does outcast the daiwa it doesn't oucast it by 150 quid!! To be honest i wouldnt buy another. Daiwa blanks I find excellent not that stiff that only a tournament caster can use them but not soft either but still giving excellent bite detection.

Anyway since I've moved up to scotland I've found that distance isnt even the key, up here 40 -60 yards is often sufficient in the deep rock marks. In fact i like the sandstorm so much if I decide to get another rod it will be another sandstorm.

Guys, Don't forget that Carp fishing has come strangly close to beach casting. With some anglers tunnel vision . . .fishing the horizon with a ball of method mix weighing 6 to 8oz plus the lead. But this has now resulted in some fantastic blanks even at the "cheapo" end of the market and I'm talking this side of 50 notes, even the right side 30 in some cases. So the next time you visit your local dealer don't walk right past in the general direction of the grip lead's, sick your nose is the Carpy stuff.

OK there's a lot of expensive and wonderful rods, also expensive and rubbishy rods but look carefully at some of the 3lb or 3 1/2 test rods and you'll be surprised.

I was treated to a shakespear zx something or other for my birthday a year ago, it also came with a shakespear multi priced about £35 to £40.

The reel was a waste of time so I shelved the bothe of them.

On Saturday night I took the rod as it had the night light base on it. I used it with the abu 6500 mag elite loaded with 15lb line to within about a 1/32 of an inch from the top of the spool.

With my usual up and over style of casting I was amazed to see the spool emptied down by about a 1/4 inch plus. :D

I could not see touch down but perhaps one you lads will know approx. how far it went. :D

The rod is a little bit swishy in its action but I could not get over the results. :D

I fish, I catches a few, I lose a few, BUT I enjoys. Anglers Trust PM
