  1. So what about Steves conservation bit in BFM & my dads Bobsbite in TSF? I think its good that there are two guys idependant from the ruddy NFSA doing their bit. The NFSA chairman was the clown who drempt up that ruddy stratergey, lets not forget that!
  2. If I was a conservation minded commercial fisherman like yourself Peter I would be very angry with MAFF & now Defra for alowing this situation to happen. As I have said before in order to do better for themselves and theirfamilies fishermen have to catch more fish, who would blame a man for trying to better himself finantually? The way I see it is that its DEFRAs fault for grossly miss managing our fishery. Its not imposable to manage a fishery, just look at Norway and Iceland. Its the CFP that we need to pull out of, then send our war ships to deffend our boarders. Sound daft doesnt it, but it would work. RSA aint going to get anywhere against until they realise that not all commercials are greedy granny flogging buggers and that DEFRA and the govenments atitudfe to the EU are the bad guys in this.
  3. There was a big blond caught from the Dover Breakwater a few weeks back. I wonder if more would be caught if anglers targeted them?
  4. I use lives to around 5inches for perch. I use 5lb test straight through. The hook is a size 8 to 4 wide gape. Although targeting perch I have caught more pike on this method than I ever did when actually targeting them. Ive jet to try circle hooks but fro what I understand no strike is needed. As Im using short shank wide gape hooks they are close toa circle hook and most pike are landed and hooked in the scissors, verty few bite offs even with just 5lb line.
  5. Seems Ferre has smelt the coffe, shame he cant undo his stratergey disaster.
  6. Re: NFSA‏ From: Richard Ferre (richard@rferre.fsnet.co.uk) You may not know this sender.Mark as safe|Mark as unsafe Sent: 15 January 2007 16:37:44 To: David Rowe NFSA (dr@nfsa.org.uk); 'samuel cox' (real-security@hotmail.co.uk) Sam,As your note refers to me, I feel free to reply. One of the by products of Sea Anglers seeking recognition and a voice, which by and large we have now got, is more attention and focus. If anything, the BASS proposals (which the NFSA fully and actively supported at every phase) have increased significantly this attention. Needless to say, not everyone shares our view of the world and as a result of the BASS "success" we are now under scrutiny. The draft strategy document you refer to I have had a a lot of involvement with. The idea for one came from me and I prepared a draft based on input from as many RSA people as I could get together. that formed the basis of early discussions with both DEFRA and representatives of SFC's and Commercial Fishermen. The document is now DEFRA's, they have taken over the drafting and will own the end product. I hope it is a template of steps which can be taken to improve RSA in a region. Trying to change the CFP is impossible for us, changing Inshore Fishery management is not impossible, just frustratingly diffficult. I hope this strategy will help once finished.I At the moment the document is in 1st draft discussion stage. I and fellow RSA reps will be feeding back about what we do not like. However, we (the 3 RSA reps involved) have had long and hard discussions with DEFRA, SFC's and NFFO about why we want a "golden mile" why we want increased MLS, why we want a management plan for all species important to RSA and many other points. In the process they also tell us why they do not fully support some of our ideas. The Government will legislate for licensing in the marine bill no matter what we say. Whether they then bring one in will depend on strength of opinion. I do not preach catch and release, people have every right to catch fish to eat and it should be protected. However, when asked the question "if we introduce a very special marine protected area would you rather have catch and release or no fishing?" the pragmatist in me felt that catch and release would be a preferable option. That is the only area where I have expressed a view on catch and release other than in responding to the recent consultation on Tope, where it appears to be the preferred option.. As it happens, the recent NFSA membership survey shows a surprisingly high level of support for catch and release in conservation circumstances. We are faced with some uncomfortable choices today, get attention and influence, get some of the things we want and get some things we do not really want imposed on us in the process, or do what we have always done in the past and get nothing and be ignored. The second option has not worked to date, given current state of fish stocks, so in my view we have to be mature enough to pursue the first option and manage the consequences.Regards,Richard Ferre. 7. Until they have a new chairman nothing will change! blokes a tosser!
  8. The marine bill is comming and its only right that us anglers have our say. However the NFSA chairman thought it would be good to ask for a sea angling stratergey to be included in this bill. He then consulted groups like SACN &BASS to contribute. I feel the NFSA chairmans timing was very bad, he should of been arguing for inshore restrictions on commercial effort instead of turning on what are meant to be his fellow sea anglers. I have no faith in the NFSA and am gutted they didnt go bust! The NFSA can and probably will do more damage to the RSA industry than commercial fishing ever has. I surgest we all get our responses to the RSA stratergey in before the dead line and let the powers that be know what we really think. S.C
  9. Caught five perch in a 2 hour session. four at around 1lb 8oz and the biggest at 2lb 9oz. All on kosha live rud!
  10. I always find it best to say a little prayer as I stick my hook through the top lip of my chosen live bait.
  11. Alan Yates always reminds me of Bugs Bunny except Alan is exceptionly ugly!
  12. There is the Can, wid chelmer, sandon brook blackwater, all hold good fish so get out there and find them.
  13. First 2008 perch session yesterday afternoon, not brilliant though. Caught four fish 1lb 5oz, 1lb 8z, 1lb 7oz and 2lb 7oz. Three on live gudgion one to worm. I t was very cold best fish caught right on dusk.
  14. One winter I decided to fish a local gravel pit and try for my first 20lb pike. This was mainly to combate the bass withdrewalls I suffer in winter. One day I was stuffed for bait so went to my local Tesco Express, they only sold salmon stakes and healthy good for you coaly fillets. So I used the above as bait, I rigged them on a stiff hair rig to a 3/0 uptide extra hook. I found the coaly fillets could be rolled up like a herring rollmop. That winter I caught three low 20s with many high doubles. As for fish finger I wouldnt bother!
  15. I have been targeting perch for three winters now as an antidope to bass withdrewall. I started with a 2lb target that took months then I got a flurry of fish to 2lb 15oz. Then I got a 3lb 4oz and then on the 31/12/06 I got my pb of 3lb 9oz. My best this winter is 3lb 4oz with just a hand full of upper 2s so far. Its a numbers game so be persistand and you should break your PB several times before 14th march. Good luck.
  16. They look like good perch bait!
  17. Nice cods Steve, reminds me of the good ol days. Next time your going out in the time machine can I crew?
  18. Kind of frightning isnt it Steve, not being in control of our own waters. But then this not being in controle seems to be this goverments favorite thing.
  19. And yes they did do it i the state but they also put in place decent managment plans like with the stripped bass. A wide range of tools are needed for successful fisheries manament like slot sizes and bag limits for commercial fishermen who chose to use rod and line. They also restrict the time the fishery is open to nets men to somthing like a week.
  20. I would only pay if DEFRA gave me something for my money, like more and bigger fish. To provide these more and bigger fish DEFRA would probably have to restrict commercial effort inshore. So bottom line is no I would not pay an sea angling tax with things as they are today!

    Dave Weaving

Sad news about a guy who did more than his fair share fore tope, hound and ray conservation.
  22. The NFSA only represent a very small percentage of the UKs sea anglers so it hardly seems right that government talk to them when it comes to important decissions regarding our sport.
  23. Hi Kestrel,. As SB says the witching hour is best as is first light, have you tried small live baits we find they cut out most of the small perch. I only started seriously targeting perch two years ago along with Sharkbyte and we have had some good results. Good luck and stick with it, you never know you could get one of those Ouse 4lb lunkers!
  24. Hi Wurzel, I would take anything that scientists say with a very large pinch of salt. They will come up with whatever results you want if you pay them enough. I have no faith in CEFAS!
