  1. That one is Mellings No. 1 Sorry! I misunderstood what you were saying. Not happen again Anyway, I've found it now, see my previous post for a link to its location, apparently there are some big fish in there.
  2. What are you getting at? In your first post you said that the one behind the park is the trenchy, which it isn't. Its Ince Park lake, Now you are referring to the book saying its a couple of lines under ince park lake. I know it is in the book because I have the book, I know its in lower ince because that is what the book says, my original point was where in lower ince? Anyway rant aside I have been out today and had a scout around and I have found it - or at least I have found 2 possibilities. I spoke to a couple of lads who were fishing the lake and they said that it was indeed the trenchy they were on so I'll stick with local knowledge, heres a link to it Fishing Venues Look at placemark 10 for the trenchy and also look at the others for Ince Park lake
  3. The one you are referring to is Ince Park lake and is named in the book as such.
  4. Bit of an update, I've been chatting to my grandad who remembers the trenchy a bit. He said its quite long and thin but thinks it is hard to get to now due to new houses being built very close by. I've had a toot on google maps and think I have found it. Can anyone confirm the description of long and thin? Or near new houses? If anyone is interested in seeing the locatation of it PM me and I'll send you a link to view it.
  5. As the title may suggest, I've managed to get a session at Bradshaws today with my mate Mark and his son, Danny. Anyways we decided to fish on Lodge 4 which is the main match lake at the venue. First impressions seemed ok but as the day went on the lodge became a bit crowded for my liking, not to get deterred by this we carried on with session. I was getting a few roach and bream on my pole line with 1 carp of about 3lb as well, the carp had a bit of a deformed mouth which is a shame to see, Mark was catching carp and bream on the tip with his biggest being about 5lb- most of which had deformed mouths as well. Danny had a few roach but nothing special. What became apparent was the venue was not living up to the reputation it seemed to have and I was a bit disappointed at the condition of the fish, overall it was a fair way to travel for it to be worthwhile going again so i'll be looking a bit more local for my next session and hopefully have better results but for the first session for a while it dusted off a few cobwebs ready for next time. Summary: Weather - overcast/clear Wind - light Catch - few bream and roach, 1 carp - nothing of note Methods - pole on bottom, corn and pellet
  6. Calling all wigan anglers! I have a WDAA card and I am wanting to try all the waters but something is causing ne issues. Where is the TRENCHY? It is in the book as lower Ince but its not in the map book or on the website and I've asked in the tackle shop but no-one has any idea where it is Can anyone help me out, publically or by PM would be great! Thanks in advance
  7. The rubber ring is called a rig anchor and like the others said it is for securing it to the winder. There is a way of securing the rig to the pole that doesn't invole tying the rig to end of the pole, which will create a weak spot. Basically, you'll need some length of silicone, cut a small bit off similar to a float rubber and thread it onto your whip tip. Take a longer piece and thread it onto your rig at the loop end, now pass your mainline through the loop in the rig to make an adjustable loop (like you would with a yo-yo) and pass the whip tip through this loop just past the rubber you thread on it. Pull the loop tight and push it up against the rubber. Now, twist the rig line around the whip towards the tip, as you get to the tip push the longer length of tubing up and over the tip of the whip so its half on the whip and half on your rig. All done! If you get stuck PM me and i'll try explain it better. Where do you work near L-L canal. I live near a stretch of it myself?
  8. Still not wet a line yet which is getting most distressing, to many other things getting in the way. On a plus note I did manage to get an hour out this morning and went to look at a couple of waters on the Wigan and District Anglers Association card, Ince park and Mellings number one. Mellings was quite a surprise to be honest because it actually looks quite fishy - I'm going to have a few sessions down there I think but whether or not it will produce the goods is another matter. Ince park lake is a venue I used to visit frequently as a kid but looking at it now it seems a bit overgrown and neglected which is a surprise with it being in a public park, I may give it a try though for nostalgia reasons but I don't think I'll expect much from it. I've also been trying to find a water called the Trenchy, thgis is on the clubs books but is not in the map book, so i'm a bit lost. Anyway, if any Wigan DAA members read this and can point me in the right direction I would appreciate it. Going to sign off now because I've rambled on enough. Hoping to get the rods out soon enough.
  9. You can buy hook tyers for tying spade ends, they take a bit of practice but once you are used to them you can jknock up a batch of hooklengths in no time
  10. As a general rule the traditional closed season only applies to rivers. Canals and stillwaters can be fished all year round. HOWEVER! It would be worth checking as fishery owners or local councils can impose closed seasons on any of the waters they control and they don't necessarily have to run alongside the traditional closed season. Try to find a contact telephone number for the lake owner or controlling body first and check. If you can't find any contact details then personally I would fish it.
  11. Right then, I've never done a blog like this before so i'll probably bugger something up. I am going to use this as a diary of my fishing exploits this year I think, i've never really recorded any details about my fishing so it may be fun to see how I get on. If I can get my thick old brain to figure out how to put pictures up then I'll do so if I have any of note. At the minute I've a lot of work on in the house so I've only got one trip planned and thats to Bradshaw fisheries in Bolton at the end of next week. Weather and time permitting I may try sneak an evening or afternoon session in beforehand though. Thats it for now, I'll be back next time I go fishing. EDIT: See, I've only tried it the once and I keep getting loads of error messages, I can see this being hard work!
  12. Nice one! The most important factor in any purchase is if you are happy with it. Glad you have a good reel. How many spools did it come with? I may consider it to replace the one I broke.
  13. I agree with the other posters about fishing in the margins for tench, caster and worm would be one of my first choices I think but corn and hemp have worked for me in the past. One thing I think you should really give a go is the fountain, IME anywhere fresh water enters a lake be it a stream, fountain or waterfall are good producers, maybe not for tench but if your tench swim dries up I would consider a waggler set up towards the fountain, try it shallow first then move down if you have no bites, might get you some other sport and maybe a big un.
  14. When it comes to this subject I take into account of the hook pattern as well. I like to use Preston PR range of hooks as I've loads of confidence in them. As an example of the pattern playing an important part in hook selection, I use PR21 for corn, normally in a size 18, this is quite a big hook for a 18 and has a wide gape for hooking the corn whereas a PR23 which i tend to use for baits like maggot, caster etc in a size 18 would be to small for a piece of corn IMO. These are the hooks I use more often than any other but there a few others in my hook box: PR23 - silvers and smaller baits in sizes 26 - 18 PR21 - All fish with big baits, corn, meat and paste. I use these in sizes 18 - 10 PR27/28 - these are almost the same hook only one is eyed and one is spade, this is the hook I tend to use for all my commercial fishing, they are quite strong and have a medium gape so I can use them for all monor of baits. Again I tend to use these in sizes 18 - 10 Obviously, stick to the hooks your happy with, I am happy with these so these are the ones I use but when it comes to selecting a hook size for a specific bait I think it would ber beneficial to pay a bit of attention to the pattern as well
  15. I knew I was being dense. I thought that row was for putting them into the text of your message, I just thought it didn't work!! Cheers John
  16. I have a question about the forums, When you open up a section e.g. coarse fishing, a list of all the threads are on there, as well as an indication for hot topics and new posts etc etc. My question is what are the other symbols reffering to, there are some threads that have smileys or exclamation marks and th like in a column between the thread title and the icons mentioned above. What do they mean?

Welcome! Pleasure fishing is the way to do. I fish matches on and off and although I enjoy it I much prefer to chill out on a pleasure session. Where are you located?
  18. There is some decent river fishing in that area I believe. Not to sure about stillwaters. Anglers Mail have released a summer special "where to fish guide" that is only available from tesco. Might be worth a look to see if anything is mentioned in there. I would look for you but my mags at home and I'm at work
  19. I use spade end mainly because that is what I was brought up to use, I think they create a stronger, neater knot as well but I'm not sure. I use them out of habit and because they are the easiest to get hold of.
  20. Depends what you measn by "proper" pair? A pair of prescription sunglasses with polarised lenses are just as proper as a pair of tackle shop sunglasses with polarised lenses. If you are referring to the style then who cares as long as they work. I looked into getting prescription polarised but at my opticians they wanted a lot of extra cash for the polarised lens. I just switched to contact lenses (which I always fancied anyway) and bought a cheap pair of polarise glasses from the market for £5. They are equally good as some of the tackle shop ones that are priced at £30. If style isn't an issue and you don't fancy switching to contacts then look for clip ons
  21. Welcome Back! Although I'm back home in the grim north now I used to live near Salisbury if thats the kind of area your after, or are you much further west?
  22. I'm heading up to Bradshaww Hall fisheries for the first time next week, I was hoping some of the forum members can give me some tips. My main plan of attack is probably going to be the pole on either of lakes 3, 4 or 6 I think. What baits are the top scorers here? I've checked the website for the match results but only get weights and not bait/methods. Any other methods that may pay dividends or any methods that are not worth trying, shallow pellet waggler/surface/feeder/method???? Any offers would be appreciated
  23. Depends on whether you trust your tackleshop. If the guy who works in my tackle shop recommended a reel to me I would go for it because I've used him for years and I trust his opinion. If you don't then do you know whether he is genuine or just trying to get rid of old stock. I have no experience with this reel at all but I do have an old shakespear reel in my collection that I used to use for carp before I bought a baitrunner, I never had any issues with it. What is your budget for this reel? I've just had a look at the reel and it looks ok and has a good description but if you could get feedback from someone that has used one that would be good.
  24. You could try gently holding the line with your finger, similar to touch legering, the float going under in conjunction with you feeling the pull on your line may help to improve bite indication
  25. I have a shimano sahara 3000 GTE and an exage 2500 I know they are a different model but they are the same manufacturer, the 3000 definitely feels bigger, don't have them with me now to compare the physical sizes though See svensden sports website, they distribute okuma, ron thompson and a few other brands, I can't see spares being a problem, even if a shop doesn't sell the epix reel if they have other okumas they should be able to order you spares for the epix I disagree here, they use the descriptions to give people an idea of the rod/reels intended use, otherwise someone who is new to the sport could go out and buy a match rod and small match reel and try using them to catch 30lb carp - not ideal. The descriptions give people an indication - I agree that some are too specific i.e. tench/barbel/avon/power match - all these could be used for the same purposes but without some kind of description it would just be a rod. Imagine the labour of selecting a rod would be if it were just called a rod? the poor tackle shop worker would have to ask 20 questions to just to narrow down to the one you want
