The 7D (later models only) has something called Focus Tracking - it's perfect for bif photos, but it's not on the 1D unfortunately. Most birders that take photos will use a minimum of a 300mm lens for birds, more often a 400 or 500. I know someone who uses a 300 very successfully for Dragonflies and for birds he adds a 1.4 extender to the 300 giving him a 420mm lens. 50mm (with a 35mm film camera) is reckoned to give the nearest approximation to life-size, so with a 400mm lens you have roughly 8X magnification, this can be confirmed by looking through a standard 8X magnification binocular, the view is very similar.

Whatever lens you end up with - it's never long enough for birds. You'll only get real detail (if that's what you want) by getting physically closer. For bIf photos the camera can also make a big difference - the later versions of the Canon 7D for example will keep the focus locked onto a particular subject once you've managed to tell it to.
  3. There's nowt wrong with a bit of stereotyping. None of women drivers I meet on the road around here are Sabine Schmitz, they're not even up to Mr Bean yet.
  4. There's not much to say: I stopped watching Dr Who when was 14, (which is a long long time ago) this new one won't last long, she won't be able to go back in time in the Tardis - everyone knows women can't drive any vehicle properly, let alone reverse one! They should never have given them the vote. Ooops, sorry, that's political. , (but great for starting a row at a party).
  5. They still don't like it up 'em Capt. Mainwaring.
  6. istr there was a "little onions".
  7. Well I enjoyed today's Grand Prix - especially Vettel's ruined tyre a couple of laps from the end. It's also good to see young Max back for a full race after too many DNFs recently, F1 needs more racers/drivers like Max.
  8. I think I prefer my way: the wife woke me at 3.30 a.m. with a cup of tea and said " I think you'd better take me to the hospital", (7.30 a.m. would have been better, but we can't have everything).
  9. What's burning? Grease on the thingy? (I don't really do nautical terms).
  10. I've gone back to ImageShack. https://imageshack.us/
  11. Where you been Snatcher? Photobucket is not what it was. http://uk.pcmag.com/webcom/90124/news/photobucket-breaks-image-links-across-the-internet I've gone back to ImageShack. https://imageshack.us/
  12. Don't know why that should be, unless it's incompatible with your operating system. http://pho.to/editor/download/ • Operating System: . . Windows 2000, XP, Vista, or Windows 7 • Computer Processor: .600 MHz Intel Pentium III or AthlonXP, or better • Computer Memory: . 512 MB or more • Screen Resolution: . .800x600 pixels or higher MajorGeeks has always been OK for me, dozens on there. http://www.majorgeeks.com/mg/sortname/graphic_resize_rename_convert.html I've seen FastStone recommended elsewhere, but never used it myself. http://www.faststone.org/FSResizerDetail.htm If you're running a Windows OS you'll have *Paint* on there, you can use that for most pic related stuff.
  13. I use a simple graphics programme for resizing, it does many other things too, and it can also be used on-line if you don't want to download it. (Resize is called Resample on this programme) http://pho.to/editor/

    Photo Of The Day.

Not seen this one before, best ID so far is Fuligo cinerea. It's a slime mould rather than fungus.
  15. Some sort of pliers obviously, but they almost certainly have a specific function. What is it. (and no, I don't know either).
  16. How do you kill a circus? Go for the Juggler. ******************************************** Hedgehogs! Why can't they just share the hedge? ******************************************** conjunctivitis.com That's a site for sore eyes.
  17. I'd say it's a matter of personal taste, it's much easier to clean with the plastic on, but even the worst mashed bread grime comes off cork easily enough with some warm soapy water and a scrub. I prefer the feel of cork to plastic and also feel that there's less potential for reel movement if (like me) you prefer sliding ring fittings to the Fuji type reel seat. I don't like clean shiny rods - someone else might decide they like them more than me, grunged up is good, imo. Take a scalpel or a Stanley knife to it.
  18. I've noticed your strange antipathy to the Non-fishing section, but I don't see that as the answer, any good forum has a section not dedicated to its main activity. AN is already moribund, take away the Non fishing section and it would be dead already.
  19. No, sorry, not me, the Anglers Net Forum. It's been dying for some time, but now it's become nothing more than a series of political rants, communication by youtube, and personal micturition contests. It can't go on much longer.
  20. She's from Ukraine: and doesn't do anything for me. Joan Rhodes used to live nearby when I was younger, and often popped into my mates corner shop, (which paradoxically wasn't on a corner). Joan didn't mess about with water melons, it was iron bars for Joan.
  21. I wouldn't want to play *hide and seek* with him - he'd be too good for me.
  22. I shan't bother to watch him anyway, but I hope he's not going to sing!
  23. If it's very shallow, the Barbel may only move in there during darkness - (my only experience is where they are fished for regularly) , but this would be normal behaviour anyway for a crepuscular fish, assuming they are Barbus barbus, some of the continental Barbel are often slightly different subspecies.
  24. Mine are all kept closed and the curtains drawn closed too in hot weather, it really does keep the place a whole lot cooler. I give it an airing early morning, but after that I shut up shop until it cools down in the evening.
