  1. I thought I'd entered a time warp when I read Newt's post! http://www.pacgb.co.uk/aboutpike/mythbusting.htm
  2. I used to use a swing tip rod and a carp rod for 'spinning'... At the end of the day a rod is a blank with fittings attached. One blank might be suitable for a number of different styles of fishing. The way it is built will make it more suitable for one use than others. I think the reason 'spinning rods' are scorned is because they used to be seven feet long, made of brightly coloured solid fibreglass - often with plastic or solid wooden handles and rings made from bent wire - were floppy and good for not much. Today's 'spinning rods' appear to be rather better thought out. Although the cheaper ones still look rather garish and naff.
  3. Pity it's only a glass MkIV you have, the cane ones are much better for growing beans up.
  4. If you'd said that in the first place we'd have told you that the sliding rings on a MkIV were never intended for use with a baitcaster. 'Spinning' rods have screw winch fittings. Nope. We are correct in using our stronger hand to hold the rod...
  5. Cycle inner tube might help. Either stretched over the metal rings once the reel is in place or glued/placed under the reel foot. Or you could tape/whip a Fuji plate fitting to the cork.
  6. Try this link http://aem.asm.org/cgi/reprint/64/10/3674.pdf The map's not 100% accurate.
  7. Yet the original Seaspin bodies did get bigger as the spool size increased.
  8. What I don't like about Shimanos is that it's the size of the spool that varies while the bodies stay the same. So a 'smaller' model isn't really smaller at all. If you can find them the Tica Sporteras are worth a look - the 3507 is a little bit bigger than a 30 Epix Pro.
  9. I have three I've been using for tench/bream fishing. Well impressed with them after a lot of use and abuse this year. The clutch is surprisingly good. Line lay ain't the best but looks okay to me. But then line lay is highly overrated and mostly intended to catch anglers. I use Baitrunner 3500Bs for barbel fishing which have appalling line lay and narrow spools but cast as far as Aero Baitrunners! The stewarding was kinda fun - I wish fewer fish had been caught because I was knackered after running (okay, walking fast) round the lake all day!
  10. Tica SR3507 might be worth a look. Smaller than a Shimano Baitrunner. Less than £50 each if you shop around. http://www.mavermatch.co.uk/index.php?opti...ory=3&id=65
  11. Not so much 'bolt' rigs, Budgie. More a rethinking of using standard rigs. I wasn't the first to do it, but a semi-fixed two ounce (or heavier) lead and minimum size four trebles on a handsized deadbait appears to act as a self-hooking rig. I think it also pays to use a shorter trace than is usually recommended. 12 inches or so. I'm not saying it prevents swallowed baits, that was never the intention. The concept was tried in order to eliminate dropped runs. I think it works because the pike finds it hard to eject the bait with two ounces or more of lead dangling below its mouth as it swims off. I could be way off the mark, but the approach does work. As far as avoiding deep hooked fish goes, well, I've never had a problem with pike swallowing baits without giving an indication. Maybe I've been lucky. I have always fished with weight on the line and a tight line (sometimes so tight the rod tip is pulled round and springs back when a take materialises) to a drop-off indicator. Unless I've been using a float, in which case indication shouldn't be a problem if you are vigilant. I do wonder if pike anglers get obsessed about lack of resistance when it is change in resistance (more so increase in resistance) that is important. A bait that a pike has to 'struggle' to get a grip on doesn't seem to bother them when the line suddenly goes slack and the resistance drops to nothing as the bobbin falls from the line. A paternoster link that suddenly snags up on the other hand does cause dropped runs.
  12. There's a link to that page on the PAC home page, on the left, under WEBSITE FEATURES, it says Information Library. But I think I'll add a more prominent link now. Ta!
  13. In a word, no. Steve Burke is talking sense and safety should be the priority. You'd be okay on Grasmere in such a small boat, but on the others I really wouldn't risk it as conditions can change from flat calm to rough in minutes. There have been times when I have been unable to make any progress into the wind when rowing the fifteen footers on Esthwaite. I wouldn't consider anything under twelve feet for the bigger lakes except close to the shore on a calm day.
  14. That's almost perfect, Peter. I can live with that!
  15. There's a boat? I get the whole of 'proportion' and no more. Chop some off the left hand side of the pic. That should keep a pleasing proportion. It looks a bit short on height now... Elton - I have no idea how small my screen is, resolution is 860 (or something) x whatever I think.
  16. Fair enough Peter. Consider the matter closed. But can you do me a favour? Make your signature picture narrower? Not everyone has a widescreen PC...
  17. Do you mean the one that lists posts from the P+P site and omits the post that mentions Mike Ladles site? Selective quoting at it's worst. You're wrong, Peter, and squirming like Charlie Bettell does when he's proved wrong won't change that. Sorry to be boring but here we go: Benh1985 Full Member *** Posts: 215 Single/Circle Hook deadbaits 23. Sep 2008 at 17:04 Quote Modify Remove Ive been reading afew sites which claim that single hooked deadbaits using a circle hook can lead to excellent hook ups. Mike Ladle claims they always hook fish in the corner of the mouth. http://www.mikeladle.com/catch/index.html Just wondering how do you rig your baits with one hook, and how do you know when to strike as you would think there is a high chance of the fish missing the hooks. 18. Time to drop your bone and have a read of Sherlock Roskilly's post, Peter. "Mark's post was timed at 16:47:47 4 seconds after Dave posted the link to Anglersnet at 16:47:43. I doubt that Mark would have been that quick off the mark!" Mark failed to specify which site he was referring to, so get over the fact that you misinterpreted what he wrote (as did I initially) and admit that you are wrong.
  19. Read it again, Peter. I took it that way at first, but I think he was actually referring to Mike Ladle's site. Edit - I've just looked at the P+P thread again and thought I should point out that I thought the above even before you removed your post with the link to AN. Misunderstandings like this occur when people don't quote posts or make it clear which link they are referring to. Another edit - I forgot I'd posted the link! Peter hasn't removed a post from the thread at all... D'oh!! I blame getting up at four am yesterday to go to the PAC Convention and still being tired when I found this thread.
  20. Earlier you said, "I am calling for no action other that each individual examines the issue for him/her self." Now you want us to slavishly follow the thoughts of others simply because they have access to the media to propagate their views. My opinion remains that Taylor and Aston (of whom I have never previously heard, so he can't be all that pre-eminent) are wrong - and so are you.
  21. I've examined the issue for myself. Livebaiting's okay by me. Thanks for asking.
