  1. As far as the general public is concerned I am sure that Hugh FW's programmes give a much better image of fishing, and country life in general, than many other angling programmes. At least it makes fishing look interesting.....which many programmes (unless you know what it is all about) fail to do.
  2. Hemp was originally banned because many immigrants from places like Belgium ( after WW2) used it to devastating effect in coarse fishing matches. The usual response took over: if you can't beat them, ban it. the same thing happened with swimfeeders many years ago. the story was that it drugged the fish...therefore it was somehow underhand or unethical. mud sticks...so it is still banned in many places. I remember catching a big bag of roach on the Trent over 25 years ago and a passing angler asked me how I did it. I said "hemp and casters". he called me a cheat and said " I likes to catch them fair myself"...and walked off in disgust.
  3. I caught a barbel tonight on a frozen boilie that must be 5 years old. Probably been thawed and refrozen a few times as well
  4. There is also a Sudbury on the River Dove.
  5. ....and then you will obviously need a specialist marker rod to make sure that you are spodding in the correct place ...and a reel to go with it of course. everyone knows that an ordinary rod can not possibly be used to chuck out a marker float. .....then you will need a specialist 'leading' rod and reel...etc.etc. A fool and his money are soon parted.
  6. Pity you did not include Perch. Ah well Zander will do followed by Pike
  7. Either brisbane, Sunshine coast or northern NSW....Not sure yet. My son lives in Adelaide but is moving back to Brisbane soon. We are due to go in November but not sure if it will be permanent this time. I have had a visa for a while and have to get a move on
  8. Thanks Steve I will make a list (I have quite a few) and will email you when it is complete. Should have added....it is the sale value not the insurance value I am interested in.
  9. I have read, with interest, some of the threads about angling books. The value of books is something I have never really taken any notice of. However, after reading some threads, I decided to have a look at various online booksellers to try and value some of mine. I have found that I have several books which may be worth quite a bit (to someone). I own several first editions. As I may be emigrating in the near future I may decide to sell mine. I would prefer to sell as a bulk lot rather than go through a lot of hassle. Does anyone know the best way to do this? Do any book dealers give valuations? if so who? I would be grateful for any advice.
  10. Unfortunately a lot of line is sold from the manufacturers on great big spools and is then respooled (often under a different brand name). Even if the spool is dated at manufacture there is no guarantee it will be re spooled within an acceptable timeframe.
  11. Strange test about 'european' lines...considering several of those are manufactured in America There are not as many lines as you may think....many are the same stuff with a different label on. The difference is often that they are given a different BS. for the same diameter. there are very few actual manufacturers in the world and much line sold is simply a generic make with a new name. Look here: http://www.sufix.com/FishingLine/PrivateBr...ishingLines.htm
  12. Used to fish there a few years ago. Pretty much like any other commercial I would think but then I have never fished any other. The usual carp or silver fish. I think it depends which lake you are on good luck
  13. First used Layers mash over 40 years ago....my parents kept hens and it seemed a cheap (free to me) groundbait. had some huge hauls of Tench from various Oxfordshire gravel pits on it. The pits have gone on to bigger and better things since then ....used to be free when I was a kid. didn't even have a name
  14. My son often brings me some back on 1500m spools and it is a bit less than that but not much. Does that include shipping and duty?
  15. A lot of brand name reels are also made in the far east, including HK. Possibly in the same factory
  16. I agee Just boil the stuff until it splits. No need to make it complicated.
  17. Earl of Harrington. Above the weir is quite deep and steady and will hold Roach, Bream and Chub. Below the weir has more chub and lots of Barbel. I would think Bream would be your best target at this time of year but I have not fished that stretch for years and may be out of touch. The Derwent has always been a good roach water. Earl of Harringto n have some water below the weir and this is Chub and Barbel territory. Silver fish may show anywhere.
  18. Which section are you on at Borrowash? Who is the controlling club? The river at Borrowash varies considerably depending on whether it is above or below the weir. The target fish will also be very different. I fish regualrly in that area but could only advise if I know which section.
  19. You could, of course, just buy one new reel to help you get the distance but then your gear would not match would it
  20. Why do you need to buy new gear then?
  21. I would go back to the original point. You want to catch a PB and your water holds them. Why do you need to fish at distance? Just because everyone else does means nothing....a lot of 'distance' fishing is purely fashion and so is the gear supposedly needed to do it. There is a kind of 'macho' streak in Carp fishing mainly brought about by the tackle trade and their allies the carp comics. If everyone fishes at distance you may be better off fishing close in....may give you the 'edge' (as it is often called). Don't fall for the hype. If you want to spend your money then spend it on a good fishery rather than tackle that will, no doubt, be out of fashion in a few months.
  22. I ma in a number of clubs and they all have waiting lists (those are the type of clubs I prefer to join) All have websites. Both coarse and game. No decline in my area.
  23. I know...spent some time in Noosa a few years ago. Will probably end up in Brisbane.....my better half will also have a say need to decide soon I suppose.
