  1. I'm with Medway Green and as a teacher, albeit Primary School, I'd say the following. I agree children need to leave school with skills that will set them up for life. This does not however have to be A Levels or a University degree. For many children this is not the right route and what is needed is good vocational training. This does not need to be in a school environment but rather in the workplace and with day release to college. That way pupils are receiving a wage and also the training that they need for a career. The seconday schools are already beset with so many discipline problems that forcing children to stay on beyond 16 to attend lessons on subjects that don't interest them. and they're not academically able to assimilate, is to my mind madness. Sadly many of the 'troublemakers' come from homes where education is not valued and no support is given to the schools when they attempt to deal with behaviour problems. This is very evident even in the Primary sector and it just gets worse as the children get older. Once again this proposal is all down to politics and has nothing to do with what's best for our youngsters.
  2. I agree Elton, never could get the bread to be really crisp. Was given a top of the range Panasonic, Antony Worrall Thompson, all singing, dancing machine when I retired from school. However got rid of it in the local auction. I think you really need the direct heat from the oven to do the job properly. I've gone back to baking my own when I have the time, or Steve nags me enough!!!
  3. My hardy fuchsia is still fine although the others wilted with the first hard frost. There are daffodils out down our road; in one garden they've been out since 3 or 4 weeks before Christmas. Other plants are making new leaves, the weeds are still growing between the cracks in the patio (darn them!) and the house opposite has a flowering cherry out. Strange weather indeed!
  4. Here's a bit of fun. http://calm.adventcalendar2006.co.uk/home.php Enjoy
  5. All I can say is lucky you. Not one of the two Tesco's in Ashford nor the one in Folkestone had pouches although they sold laminators. May be I hit them on an off week. Ended up getting them quite reasonably in Argos.
  6. A man and woman had been married for more than 60 years. They had shared everything. They had talked about everything. They had kept no secrets from each other. Except that the little old woman had a shoe box in the top of her closet that she had cautioned her husband never to open or ask her about. For all of these years, he had never even thought about the box, but one day the little old woman got very sick and the doctor said she would not recover. In trying to sort out their affairs, the little old man took down the shoe box and took it to his wife's bedside. She agreed that it was time that he should know what was in the box. When he opened it, he found two crocheted dolls and a stack of money totalling $95,000. He asked her about the contents. "When we were to be married," she said, "my grandmother told me the secret of a happy marriage was to never argue. She told me that if I ever got angry with you, I should just keep quiet and crochet a doll." The little old man was so moved; he had to fight back tears. Only two precious dolls were in the box. She had only been angry with him two times in all those years of living and loving. He almost burst with happiness. "Honey," he said, "that explains the doll, but what about all of this money? Where did it come from?" "Oh," she said, "that's the money I made from selling the dolls." A Prayer for married women....... Dear Lord, I pray for Wisdom to understand my man; Love to forgive him; and patience for his moods. Because Lord, if I pray for strength, I'll beat him to death. Amen Now where's my shoe box - only joking Steve!!!
  7. Steve and I always stay in B&Bs whenever possible. The two best sites in my opinion are www.farmstayuk.co.uk www.stilwell.co.uk Both of these give prices and ratings and we've found some really excellent places, some of which rival 4* hotels for the amenties and service. Another site which also includes hotels and is useful if you're looking near big towns and cities is www.smoothhound.co.uk This site covers both hotels and B&Bs and also gives direct links through to the various hotel and B&B websites in many cases. With these 3 I think you'll find you have all you need. If you do ever get stuck and find yourself having to resort to a motel the best chain is Innkeepers Lodge. They are gradually rolling out round the country. Unlike Premier Travel Inn and Travelodge you get breakfast included in the price and many of them are sited alongside a Toby Carvery. We stayed in one recently for 2 nights for £59 for both of us including breakfast. This was their advance booking rate so worth consideration.
  8. Thanks, have done that and the message I was getting on 'boot-up' has now disappeared. We've now re-running SpyBot etc for one last time but all the programs are coming back clear so it looks as though the problem has been solved. Have now secured the wireless. However don't know if it's coincidence but we're now running incredibly slowly. Last night was only getting 1 and 2 mbps at times!!!!!. Today best we've got is 24. Any thoughts Guys? Peggy
  9. Thanks Slap, realised that after I'd posted and in fact went on to the site via our disk. Secured the site now.
  10. I'd second that - Dell have been great for us, we're on our 3rd. Very good specs, reliability, value for money and after sales service. Bought them for school as well and as you can imagine they get a hammering from the tiddlies - survive that and they'll survive anything.
  11. First of all thanks to all you guys for helping us out with this. As regards our wireless security - I've read the blurb that comes with the Netgear WG311 router and nowhere does it tell you what to do to make it secure - doesn't even mention security. I've been on to Netgear's website and they do have an Adobe file with instructions about WEP security etc but I'm afraid I fell at the first hurdle. I'm good on operating software but don't understand the internal workings so don't go there! Any help on this would be great. In reply to Jeepster's question we don't live in a built up area, we're in a small village, down a cul-de-sac with open fields behind the houses opposite. I've just run Windows Defender and it tells me that my computer is running normally. Spyware Doctor said I had 12 low risks in temp files and cookies but these have now been cleared out. Cookies have to ask permission so don't know how these got through as I'm very careful which ones I allow and then usually only as temporary ones. Cheers Peggy
  12. As a Primary school teacher I'd comment on the following His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a six-year- old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; Having had to deal as a Headteacher with a case of a 5 year old attempting sex with another 5 year old, of the same sex I hasten to add, it does make you wonder about society today. A teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition. Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job they themselves failed to do in disciplining their unruly children. I had a rule in my classroom that if a child wasted work time he lost his playtime. However I was taken to task on a number of occasions by parents for depriving their child of their free time. It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer Panadol, sun lotion or a Band Aid to a student - but could not inform the parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion. There are I think different issues here. I certainly wouldn't administer medicines to a child without the parent's consent. However there were mixed message given out to us - I was expected to give a child a gastric feed each day but I was not allowed to help a diabetic child test blood sugar levels if we suspected a problem. However parents did expect us to dish out spoonfuls of cough medicine etc at lunchtime and would be quite aggressive at times when we explained that we wouldn't administer non-essential medicines. I was also not allowed to investigate any kind of injury if it required touching a child's clothes. Therefore if a girl had a cut above the knee I had to invite the child to lift her skirt. If the child declined then that was that. However of course I could be in trouble later with the parents for not doing anything about it. I couldn't change a child who'd wet his pants. Instead the child had to either to sort himself out, wait for his parent to come or stay wet. Thankfully I no longer teach except for the odd day as a favour for a Headteacher I know well. I certainly wouldn't recommend anyone to go into the profession now. We're damned if we do and damned if we don't.
  13. I've checked and our network is un-secured. What do we have to do to secure it please? Peggy

  15. The Nursery Rhyme, 'Pop goes the weasel' sounds quite incomprehensible in this day an age! The origins of the rhyme are believed to date back to the 1700's. We have listed two versions of the rhyme o n this page. The first rhyme is the better known version - some translation is in order! Pop and Weasel? These words are derived from Cockney Rhyming slang which originated in London. Cockneys were a close community and had a suspicion of strangers and a dislike of the Police (they still do!) Cockneys developed a language of their own based roughly on a rhyming slang - it was difficult for strangers to understand as invariably the second noun would always be dropped. Apples and Pears ( meaning stairs) would be abbreviated to just 'apples', for instance, "watch your step on the apples". To "Pop" is the slang word for "Pawn". Weasel is derived from "weasel and stoat" meaning coat. It was traditional for even poor people to own a suit, which they wore as their 'Sunday Best'. When times were hard they would pawn their suit, or coat, on a Monday and claim it back before Sunday. Hence the term " Pop goes the Weasel" In and out the Eagle? The words to the Rhyme are "Up and down the City road, in and out the Eagle - That’s the way the money goes - Pop! goes the weasel". The Eagle refers to 'The Eagle Tavern' a pub which is located on the corner of City Road and Shepherdess Walk in Hackney, North London. The Eagle was an old pub which was re-built as a music hall in 1825. Charles Dickens (1812-1870) was known to frequent the Music Hall. It was purchased by the Salvation Army in 1883 ( they were totally opposed to drinking and Music Halls). The hall was later demolished and was rebuilt as a public house in 1901. Alternative Lyrics "A penny for a spool of thread, a penny for a needle" - this version has led to a 'weasel' being interpreted as a shuttle or bobbin, as used by silk weavers, being pawned in a similar way as the suits or jackets owned by the Cockneys. Pop goes the weasel Rhyme lyrics, origins and history Pop goes the Weasel Half a pound of tuppenny rice, Half a pound of treacle. That’s the way the money goes, Pop! goes the weasel. Up and down the City road, In and out the Eagle, That’s the way the money goes, Pop! goes the weasel. Alternative Lyrics A penny for a spool of thread, A penny for a needle. That’s the way the money goes, Pop! goes the weasel. Pop goes the Weasel Rhyme lyrics, origins and history http://www.rhymes.org.uk/a116-pop-goes-the-weasel.htm
  16. Great - love 'em all but especially the last one
  17. A good one but I remember it from many years ago as an Irish joke. Obviously very non PC now of course. Mind you rather sexist in its present guise Peggy
  18. Someone's been peeking through Steve's office window. I told him we should put the net curtains back up!
  19. A husband walks into Victoria's Secret Boutique to purchase a sheer negligee for his wife. He is shown several possibilities that range from $250 to $500 in price, the more sheer, the higher the price. Naturally, he opts for the most sheer item, pays the $500, and takes it home. He presents it to his wife and asks her to go upstairs, put it on, and model it for him. Upstairs, the wife thinks, "I have an idea. It's so sheer that it might as well be nothing. I won't put it on, but I'll do the modeling naked, return it tomorrow, and keep the $500 refund for myself." So she appears naked on the balcony and strikes a pose. The husband says, "Good Grief! You'd think for $500, they'd at least iron it!" He never heard the shot. Funeral on Thursday at Noon. Closed coffin.
  20. Oh dear what am I to do!!!!!!!!!!!! As a retired head teacher and current university tutor and the offspring of two first cousins................!!!!!!! I don't appear to have done so badly have I? Mind you I suppose I could be classed as having a defective gene - I married Steve Being serious surely there is a great difference between a one off marriage between two first cousins and the continual practice within a very small community where I would think the risk would increase over time. It's dangerous IMO to make sweeping general statements which can cause upset or are likely to be misinterpreted.
  21. I quite agree Rob. I think the security services have done a fantatic job uncovering this - the possibilities if they hadn't don't bear thinking about. I don't want to know the details if that's going to compromise the operation. According to the TV people at the airports have been very calm and co-operative - just grateful that our security service is so efficient.
  22. It apparently just pops up from time to time whilst she's using the computer. Doesn't appear to cause a problem but she was just curious to know what it means. Peggy
  23. Sorry to hear the sad news Terry - loved the Morris stories and they were a great hit in the magazine I edited some years ago. Peggy
