  1. On a more serious note however is it true that the monos with the greatest reputations for abrasion resistance are the thickest for a given diameter. For example: Big Game. I also saw some test results a while back where 95% of the nylons broke well above the stated BS, and with the exception of Fireline the hi tech lines broke at significantly lower BS. I have also seen knot strength results for Fluoro carbons which did not compare well with standard Mono.
  2. I also managed to hit mouse early as well, hence previous post. That was a great spot, I have been in stitches for ages. Yep I meant fireline. The picture posted is real Diamond so to speak. Mind you I think that recent posting of the reel with the circuit board to control over run has influenced me subliminally. Thanks cheered me up no end on a day where gut rot meant the tackle I loaded the car with last night went no where except back into the garage this afternoon.
  3. Did I really type Firewire
  4. I have both. I usually use hangers because they are easier to leave attached to the buzz bar when you put it away in the buzz bar bag. I have both because I got swingers and switched to hangers.....and I never throw anything away or sell it. Agree with mpbdsu when after Zander. The interesting thing is I don't believe either provide me with bite detection. They hold the line taught across the alarm, and also enable drop back detection via the alarm.
  5. May be we should have watched less videos
  6. Excellent news I am not alone Is there a special clinic for us with "might need it some day syndrome" ? The other syndrome of course is "no matter what invite or opportunity arises....I am equipped to go" Chesters: Intrepids I remember them when I was a boy, my first reel was an intrepid. Don't have any now. Have a very early shakespeare ambidex. When I left home my "classic" gear stayed in my mom and dads garage, 12 years later I went to retrieve it, it was all totally defunct rusty and my shakespeare Match12 broken, as was the 7ft Hardy (half cane and half split cane) lure rod) (thanks Dad). Most daming of all one bait box still had what could be loosely termed bread in it, but at least it was 12 year old vintage and its IQ was quite significant. Closest I get to classic gear today I suppose is the odd time you see me by the canal I am the one sitting on a wicker basket, using a float rod wearing the "Poles cannot be reel rods" T-Shirt.
  7. Got our new rod licences yesterday. One for my son, two for me, and one for me wife. Still have to get my sons second licence. My eldest daughter will need one as well next year. Could have bought a fishery instead I recon ! So if the EA is listening. A family concession would be welcome here, given I still have three kids to come on line so to speak in terms of the EA revenue stream. Plus I have yet to fish a venue in this country that permits 4 rods (I know they exist), so why can't I have a single rod licence at half price if I already hold a full one....ditto for my son. Also because your migratory licences are so over priced my wife, son and I do all our migratory fishing in Scotland or abroad....so thats some of our money you are not getting.....
  8. Whats the diameter of the products in the graph for the same breaking strain. Do the results hold the same at low BS and high BS. Very interested because I am due to make an investment shortly and was planning to go for 50Lb firewire on my Mitchel Orca 75L Lever Drag. I was also considering 14lb Fire wire for one of my lure set ups. Does the addition of a nylon rubbing leader (of what ever BS the situation requires) effect the decision process between Nylon/braid/fusion significantly ? To date I have used braid only for plumbing and pike drifter fishing. Unless you count gel spun backing on my salmon/saltwater fly reel
  9. As an example I have a 10ft Shimano perfection fly rod and a leeda dragonfly reel, I keep it for boat fishing for trout. I have not been boat fishing for trout for 5 years or more and cannot see me doing in in the foreseeable future. But I get caught by the "I might need it some day syndrome".
  10. Hi Folks, I was just wondering, given this forum is full of really keen anglers, how many rods and reels do folks own, and of those how many are genuinely used each year, as opposed to used once to ensure a clear conscience about the fact the car does not fit in the garage. I note people selling kit on Ebay, I must admit to never getting rid of anything as I acquire new or better kit. It just never occurred to me to dump the older stuff and get some fishing tokens for it.
  11. Thanks guys I will pursue both these avenues.
  12. Hi all, my wife and eldest son have been river fly fishing for 2 to 3 of years now and very successfully too. So they can keep their arm in between trips to Scotland and Germany they have decided to join a small stillwater syndicate near home. Can anyone recommend a good book on small stillwater techniques and tactics etc ? Neither has fished still waters before. I am not in a position to teach them very much at all, as stillwater fly fishing is not my cup of tea, excepting Pike, which even then I prefer to pursue on rivers. They know about casting etc, its the knowledge of behaviour, flies, how to find the fish etc etc they need. Both have 9ft #6 outfits etc so their gear is OK as well. Many thanks
  13. Certainly used the boiling water method, but beware if dyed ones are used because could not get the bronze colour out the sink for ages. In the past I have always kept my bait box in the main fridge....doesn't everyone Now a days on only kill a few each year....I impale them on a sharp hook and drown em.
  14. Canal in MK is definately open.
  15. I get completely different things from the different forms of fishing I do. Bivvied up for carp is very different to mid river in chestwaders. The environment in which I am fishing is very important. Overall I think now a days its a personal challenge for me rather than fun, I tend to fish alone when actually trying to catch, mostly. The fun comes in the pub or hotel after fishing, or at a carping social with the BBQ,we never catch on socials. But although I do very little sea fishing for me sea fishing somes up what first "catches the angler" or at least me. Its the leviathan below that captivates us as kids, especially when I used to sit fishing the unknown china clay pits in cornwall. Unfortunately the leviathans always won when I encountered them in those days. Everytime I go sea fishing (no doubt because I am not very good at it) I have no idea what I will catch.....and thats great.
  16. Interesting Lancslass, I was raised on warm milk with weetabix in Staffordshire, my wife who is a Lancslass (well all but her first three months of life) was raised on cold milk with hers, her parents were Yorkshire. We stick by our upbringing to this day.
  17. Welcome back indeed. Did my return 12 years ago after an 11 year absence. You did better yesterday than me also. Landed one pike out of three takes on dead bait and zero out of three on the fly. But better than a blank.
  18. The biggest question of all is how do the minority get such a loud voice when it comes to banning things they do not like ? Surely in this day and age we could use the red buttons on our telly remotes. Inverse democracy....a dangerous trend.
  19. Sorry thats owners. I have fished eight rivers so far all the same approach
  20. When I fish in southern Germany the fishery owner will not issue a day ticket unless you provide a valid rod licence. Never understood why that is not the case over here.
  21. The biggest issue I am aware of is leakage due to constant flexing of the breathable membrane and also puncture restistance to sharp sticks thorns etc. There was a scientific study undertaken covering many brands. I am glad yours are doing you proud and long may they do so. However I would not alter my advice regarding breathables suitablity for working party type activities. Its just a risk assessment matter, not a statement that cheaper breathables will definately fail the owner in these circumstances.
  22. Cheers Peter. You might find me "fly fishing" for carp now again, but not bivvied up for salmon or trout ever . To the forum, The forum seemed very hard on Jonney5, his initial comment was not demonstrably wrong and had validity in parts, and was, admittedly on a politically incorrect basis, factually correct. It is true that it was not optimally presented for best benefit for all, including most of all Nathen. This is a free speech (swearing and racism etc excluded) forum I take it.......and did his comments really warrant personal attacks regarding him being boring or similar ? I also note from the recent post in the sea fishing forum and the response received from an AN member that any advice given in this thread has been totally ignored. Trouble with the web is that anyone can put up a site with any old crap for content. What is this forums view on what earns an individual the "moral right" to set up and link an advice giving web site on a subject. I am not talking about "in my experience" flavoured sites, but sites giving authoritive statements and advice not linked to personal experience/input. We are probably less than 10 years away from our first famous angler who has never actually been bankside or wet a hook !! Not an observation about anyone in the AN forums. Having seen the latest post on the sea angling forum......my advice ....forget web sites and go fishing. There you go Jonney we can sink together
  23. Oh yes. One radical piece of cross pollination. I carry scales and a weigh sling when I am salmon fishing.
