  3. you're right steve, i was just replying to the quote of "swilling hands in water after each fish rather than washing them" probably should have gone into more detail theres a good article on weils on lure shack lure shack Weil's Disease is a bacterial infection carried in rats' urine, which contaminates water and the banks of lakes, rivers and ponds. It can be caught by humans and is potentially fatal. It is a serious disease in human beings that requires hospital treatment. It can enter the body through cuts, grazes, through the mouth or via mucous membranes such as those that line the eyes or nose. The early symptoms are similar to those of flu with fevers, rigours (stiffness) and chronic fatigue and muscle pain, which normally start 3 to 19 days after exposure to contaminated water. Every year people die from this disease, which is unnecessary because it is easily treated if diagnosed in time. By simply taking the following precautions Weils can be avoided:- Always wear an suitable unhooking or fish handling glove when handling or unhooking pike or zander Cover any cuts, sores or scratches with waterproof plasters Disinfect any wounds that occur at the waterside Wash your hands or cover food with a wrapper before you eat Do not put your hand in your mouth after immersing in river water and never place bait or fishing line in your mouth Do not touch dead animals, especially rats If you develop flu like symptoms that persist tell your doctor that you may have been exposed to Weils so that he/she can consider it in the diagnosis Do not leave food, ground bait or bait on the bank side.
  4. because its the water where you will get weils from not the fish i use a fragrence free one,its achohol based(evaporates) ,no need for towels, hence no cross contamination . less than a couple of quid and lasts ages.
  5. yep i'll second that... most importantly 100% pike friendly
  6. yep thats the man budgie,do you know him? £12 a pair, posted. (dont know if he sells singles ) well worth the money for yours and the pikes health and no im not on commission
  7. thats them cheers chavender. quoted from "chico" OK I'll tell you what they are not- they are not hook or toothproof. Anything that is isn't pike friendly, they are either too bulky or abrasive especially on smaller fish. What they are- they are "raker-proof" 99% of all the cuts we juat take as part of pike fishing are due to rakers cutting us, these totally eliminate that. The material is kevlar based and WILL NOT drag on the rakers, don't know how but they just don't, if you try to drag on them they just glide past, very good for you and even better very good for the fish. They are also very thin and sensitive, I can open/close stay-lok snaps whilst wearing them. As they are so sensitive you can wear them all the time and so you are not struggling at the worst time to put them on. You can also fish with multipliers with them on which is a first. They can be washed, won't shrink and will not fray. They are not waterproof but if they do get too wet just wring them out like a chamois. pm the man and he will send you an image and ,yes wet the gloves before handling the fish
  8. slime dont bother me any more, not now i've got my chico gloves (gill raker friendly) take them off to eat or have a smoke, and then give them a quick wash when i get home
  9. can see it too had to scroll down like newt said , but its there, time was correct as well

  11. well the broom stick is now my favourite lure ,been lure fishing for a while now and things have been a bit slow to say the least . (evening sessions have been hard with the temps lately) but even though the temperature dropped considerably yesterday(light rain as well),and it was a new moon.....none of this played a part in yesterdays fishing it was the broomstick made another 4 this afternoon any suggestions on fav colours....pine seems to work
  12. had a take on a 8 inch piece of broom handle today (not painted)
  13. just thought i'd say a big thankyou,as after 3or 4 evening lure sessions without as much as a follow.. i decided a change of tatics was needed after reading your article...here i decided to make one the same, having all the bits handy when down a local water at 8 tonight and not knowing how it was going to act(the lure) gave it first try...... i cast to a large snag, and on the third turn of the reel, just as i was thinking what a nice wobble it had ......a pike of about 14lb came launching out the water with broomstick with hooks in it sticking out its gert gob .....it came back off(forgot to strike i was so amazed...) ....... but who cares it worked lovely action.FIRST CAST!!! you made one man very happy tonight all broomsticks are now in my possesion just not sure whether i want to paint it now oh also had a 6-7 lbers on a wobbled sardine, and lost a good eel on sardine as well in a hour but im just happy with my broom stick thanks again leon
