Would this amountto a significant dint in the numbers of tope?

I'm not trying to start an argument BUT, why protect tope as opposed to other species. Surely research needs to be done into the possible effects.

I've certainly seen tope on fish mongers shelves before.

It's hard to see how killing 300 tope a week could NOT make a significant dent in their numbers, bloodywell wipe them out more likely. Research does NOT need to be done, because if the answers don't suit the fishermen they'll ignore it anyway. Just to clarify what they intend to do. They will string mile long lines of hundreds of baited hooks all over the tope grounds. They will pull in the lines, unhook the tope, cut its fins off, chuck the fins in a bucket and chuck the fish back in the sea to die.

phil.

Exploitation is one thing. Annihilation of any species for a tiny part of their body is something else!

Why doesn`t the tosser that wants to export just their fins, get a proper job? I`m sure he could entice enough local pet dogs into the back of his transit, then export them to the far east!

Commercials are getting desperate. They know that their trade is dying.

Why don`t they promote dogfish as a luxury food? More than enough of them to go round.

We don`t use J`s anymore!!

Bet they could wipe them out in a couple of years without bother... What is to become of the tope, i dread to think... Will they be gone before i get the chance to see one in the flesh?
