Hi Hashman

Firstly may I say how brave you are.....I would not but myself in front of audience of children......a very cheap and effective way to disinfect fish wounds and sores is to use compounds like Methylene Blue or Malachite Green......being in solution they are very easy to apply with a cotton bud and being very vivid colours you can see where and how much you have put on......the staining qualities are a disadvantage when younsters are handling it because although it will do no harm to the kids it does stain skin and clothes.......don't want to have to use Iodine on little Johnnies head do we from an irate mother!.......this type of medication can be bought from any fish keeping shop but it can be dear to buy that way that way......not an ideal answer but it might get the ball rolling for other peoples ideas.

It takes longer for the river to get to the sea than it does for a man to make an error.

Could try melafix or Aquarian first aid, which are a tea tree oil type solution, and doesn't stain (clear solution). It's a natural anti bacterial, which works well on open wounds or fin/lip damage. Again you should be able to get it from Aquarium supply shops or garden centres with pond sections, perhaps buying a large bottle then dividing it up into smaller ones for the kids. Doesn't smell to bad either (menthol type of smell).

Contact Kryston, Wychwood, Big Fish Adventure or any of the other companies that sell carp care products and see if they will donate 25 bottles for you.

I'm sure if you offer to call it the Kids Kryston Fish-In they would gladly oblige, as they so often have done for other well run fish-ins in the past.

Make sure you outline how to use the stuff to them as well, show them, we dont want the kids pouring it down the carps throats now do we

Koi keepers have long been using Bonjela to protect open sores etc due to it's ability to resist being washed off or diluted.

Anglers are catching on to this & it's use is increasing all the time. You seem to be on top of the job, well done for helping the kids.

i use the natural method , take six 7lb tench , scrape from head to tail with a gillette razor flicking the mucas into a jar , remove the last of the mucas with a sureform and put fish back ,the amount gained should treat 2 8lb carp :) or 4 4lb ones :)i am running out of tench for this effective method they seem to be dieing in droves there seems to be 6 more dead ones every time i check the pond

Being an extremely sceptical and probably a miserable old wotsit, I would say that if you do not understand what you are proposing to advise these kids to put on "carp wounds" then it is best left unsaid.

I can imagine the reaction of some parents if the kids come home with tales of wounded fish and how to treat them....and if the local press got hold of the story.....

I know your intentions are good, but not a subject to discuss with kids.
