Hurricane Rita - what would you do if ...

Doesn't look good at the moment. And the hurricane season is far from over! Peggy and I will be keeping an eye (no pun intended!) on this one as well.

Newt you have a lovely country but weather extremes compared to the UK.

I will settle for our sometimes "poor" English summers thank you very much.

Hope it does not do as much damage as the last one mate

Newt:

Vagabond has a daughter and her family there I think.

Yeh, they are on high ground near Lake Travis, NW of Austin - we hope a lot of the sting will be out of Rita when and if she gets there.

Will be keeping a close watch on things.

This little piggy left early. Despite the warnings however, several of my neighbors have stayed behind, because they've "always stayed."

There are indeed so called “refuges of last resort” in the Keys. They are there for residents who have “changed their minds” and motorists who are stranded on US1 after it has been closed.

Newt you made reference to the Cat 5 Labor Day hurricane of 1935. These events (Cat 5 storms) are relatively rare but really not new, the obvious difference is now we have a much larger population in the coastal states who have become inured to the very real dangers of these monster cyclones by the Jim Cantores of this world. It’s got to be OK if we can see him standing there leaning into the wind with the microphone in his hand.

The history books tell us that Flagler’s Overseas Railway was destroyed so many times that one of the workers was alleged to have said. “This is getting to be a Marathon. Thus legend has it that is how the city on Key Vaca got its name.

Oh, cr*p I think I forgot some squid in the freezer.

Cat5 as of 4 hours ago with sustained 155mph winds and gusts to 175mph and central pressure down to 920mb. Getting a larger wind field built so hurricane force winds to a wider section of coast when she makes landfall in about 66 hours. Note that she seems to have set a record for speed of the drop in central pressure (the barometer measurement within the eye). If you don't do barometers then trust me, 920mb is LOW - 27.17 inches in old money. To give a comparison, the average pressure worldwide is 1013.25 mb (29.92" of mercury) although for some reason the US tends to run a little higher and a pressure below 30.0 inches is considered a low pressure system.

And make sure you are on the lake fishing when the pressure begins to drop. It can lead to some seriously good fishing at times.
