No "long run". The metal will groove pretty quickly and damage will begin in the "short run".

Only thing I know of to do with a tip-top ring is to replace it. Easy enough to do. Any good tackle shop (at least the US ones and I assume the same with UK) should carry replacement tip-top ring kits. Just match the size to the diameter of your rod tip.

They are held on with a heat-sensitive glue so heating the base of the tip-top with a lighter for a couple seconds should allow you to slide it off. Then a little of the heat-melt glue that should come with the replacement (or if not, nail polish works well) and slip the new one on your rod.

All I do is to put a match/lighter under the tip ring to remove the old one. It's not uncommon though for the old ring to blast off like a rocket so be careful.

Take the top section to the tackle shop and fit up for a replacement. I use araldite, it gives you time to align it correctly. A two minute job.

I expect to pass through this world but once; any good thing therefore that I can do, or any kindness I can show to any fellow - creature, let me do it now, let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.

Complete nightmare to get the replacement off if you need to though! Araldite is damned hard once set and a lighter won't do the trick ;-)

Best bet is hot melt glue, you don't need a glue gun to use it and you can buy a pack of the stuff, enough to do about a thousand tip rings (at least) for under a fiver from most DIY stores.

Alternatively, if you're not too far from Kent Zappagod, I've got a glue gun and can either loan it to you or replace the tip ring for you (provided you bring the replacement ring) free of charge mate.

I use Super Epoxy (which is the same sort of thing as Araldite but it's made by Plastic Padding Co.)and I don't have any trouble removing it again with a match or a lighter.

BTW Super Epoxy is thinner than Araldite and dries completely clear,I also use it over whippings.

Newt are you saying that nail polish is better than good super glue to stick the eye on to the rod

For a tip, I'd say it is as good. I've not used super glue but have used the hot melt glue and nail polish. Never lost a tip-top with either.

super glue only seems to work on rubber , a belt drive on my ancient dual deck ( old geezer talk ,LPs , 45`s etc vinal etc) broke over ten years ago (ish) and stuck with superglue still works fine , superglue has on anything else failed (except fingers) i use it as a thread lock ,as a glue its worthless. on hard plastic "airfix" cement is superior. hot glue guns are fine but get a big one the cheapy little ones hardly get hot enough to melt let alone give you time to assemble the item :) and if you bugger it up a match will let you realign the offending ring ,another tip is shrink tube ( the type with glue inside) will fix tip rings in the field.
