So! Was it a Myth?

Says it all!

Now say whether or not you would have voted the way you/we did to join the Common Market if you had known it would turn out how it has.

As for the handgun ban, it was the media reporting showing 'rambos' in cammo outfits shooting at charging man targets that got all the air time. Within an hour of the ban being voted for, the first thing on TV showed a .22 target pistol being fired at a paper target.

Practical pistol shooting had bugger all to do with the handgun ban, the ban was pushed through to help gain more votes at the forth coming election (the sun/mirror readers vote whos knowledge of firearms and shooting could be fitted into a matchbox without taking the matches out first) and pistol shooting became a "sacrifical lamb" for the rest of the shooting fraternity who at that time were split(remember all the different associations NRA, SRA, NPA, BASC etc) with each section looking down their noses at each other with an "i'm alright jack" attitude, it was this fragmented view and a lack of a united front that was the main reason the govenment could force the 1997 ammendent through even though their own review (by lord cullen i believe) did not recommend a total ban on handguns.

I probably would have voted for it, as the least worst option. I have said repeatedly that I am not an unquestioningly pro-European, but having so much of our trade within a closed market area and without (and that's our own doing), trying to replace it in a managable fashion seems to me beyong the capabilities of the country and thus adding to the economic turmoil we're facing now.

As for the handgun ban, I have said repeatedly over the years, outside the military, police and pest control, I can't see a justification for 'sporting shooting' at stationary pieces of paper, so you're unlikely to elicit a sympathy vote from me no matter how you spin a hard luck story. The television coverage is surely a matter of selective editting by the tv companies rather than the fault of the practical firearms groups. Are you sure you're complaining in the right diirection?
