Correct Way To Do Sit-Ups

Has anyone got a link to a good exercise site that will show me how to do sit-ups properly?

I've lost 2 1/4 stone recently and whilst I still want to lose a bit more, I really need to firm up my stomach at the same time. I've started doing sit-ups, but it's making the small of my back hurt, which can't be right.

Any other simple tummy-flattening exercises would be appreciated, too.

Get down a gym and seek some proper advice would be one suggestion. Sit-ups are notoriously hard on the back and IMHO best avoided. You can do mini sit-ups and just raise your upper back a small way off the ground - you should still be able to feel the pull on your belly 6-pack.

Another suggestion is to get hold of one of those womens exercise video's - just make sure you have a good explanation for the mrs ;) They should have an easier version of sit-ups.

<edit> found this site but not sure it's got enough details :wheelchair:

Better still this one looks to have much more useful info

Try getting someone to do them for you?

Seriously, be careful with your lower spine.... I have back trouble as a result of wrongly excercising as a young man.

It dawned on me as I read Rob's first comment that my brother-in-law is the regional manager for a large fitness chain. I may well see him over the weekend, so will pick his brains.

As you know, I taught martial arts for many years and even went through the first tranche of sports coaching courses when they started to appear in the late 80's.

There are lots of different ways to excersise your stomach and inner core muscles but the absolute best advice would be to either join a gym that's part of a big chain and make use of their personal trainers/excersise coaches or use your contacts through your BiL do achieve the same thing.

Sports coaching has moved on massivly since I did it and the spotty kid that you get to talk to may very well be qualified to an extremely high standard.

Try lifting weights - 12 ounces at a time. Ha.

Leg lifts work well while lying prone. Good for the abs.
