Making Paste

Chub Frenzy

Recommended Posts

I used to make ordinary white bread paste and flavour it with either

1. Rum Essence, or

2. Aniseed Oil

and catch a lot of roach on them both. Reading this thread made me realise I haven't used either for years, so as soon as the weather breaks I'll give it a go.

Leaves a better smell on your hands than maggots do :)

Just bumping this to the top, as it has the potential to be a cracking thread.

Potential.....when?......

I was told I had potential once or twice. I think I even believed it too. Now I'm old enough to know I'm rubbish.

There's time yet I suppose.....like this thread....lol....sigh!

The cheapest paste recipie is raggi flour and water. Add hot water to the ragi (millet) flour and stir/heat it until it becomes a thick brown paste.

Vagabond's recipie reminds me that a few of the better anglers in India flavour their baits with rum. There might be something in it.

Rum most likely...

Anyhoo, I suppose there are Whiskey boilies and alcohol has been used as a scent dispesant, especially with oily baits for a long time without fish fearing it. I reckon fish will try just about anything once. It's mostly how it's presented....no?

Yeh, I used rum essence at the time as I was a kid and was too young/couldn't afford anyway to use the real McCoy.

Will try again with the real stuff. Not just paste - raisins soaked in it as well, and some in my coffee. Hic

I was fishing last week with my friend when we ran out of bait. The tacle shop was closed so we asked some fisherman if we could have some of theirs, and ay them. One guy gave us some homade paste which ws amazing nd another gave us some ringers bag up paste which was the same sort of ingrediants i think.

Any recipes woldhelp but not to expensive.

Hi Chub Frenzy

I always add garlic powder and cheese to my bread paste. This seems to bring in the Chub and the odd confused Brown Trout.

Good luck!

The cheapest I know is

2 slices of buttered white bread - cut the crusts off

1 triangle of dairlea cheese spread -spread over one piece of bread

put the other piece of bread on top kneed it into a well mixed ball keep in a plastic bag pull a bit off mold it around the hook pinching it together near the shank (straight bit of the hook where the line attaches)

away you go.

EDIT -

Not the low fat version of the dairylea and it works best with real butter rather than spreads

this also kicks method mixes into touch when using a short rig. Have had bream, carp, cats, roach, rudd, perch, pike and just about everything on it using as piece of fake corn

Just expanding the thought here a bit and dividing the pastes into 2 types but both very cheap and successful. The first paste is a summer paste and will catch almost everything. Simply add boiling water to some SpecialG green groundbait and stir with a spoon. leave for a few minutes for the mix to absorb the moisture and then add either more water or more of the mix until the paste is quite sloppy but just holding together. Fish a 20mm blob wrapped around a piece of corn to hold it in place for chub carp tench etc or for smaller species just nip it on the hook. A full bag of groundbait will make several large balls of paste enough for several sessions. The other recipe is for a really cheap mix. Just blend together plain flour and water until the mix just stops sticking to your fingers. Then flatten it out and blend in a small amount of marmite and work it back into a ball. Or just flour and water if you want really cheap!
