Stillwater Barbel

Perhaps the question should be why should barbel be put into still waters rather than why not. Why tamper with nature?

Well, why put barbel into still waters? Just so people who can't be bothered to work for their barbel can have an easy life! Or is that to simplistic?

That's how I see it Peter. They're probably proud for some reason too.

She's probably taking cover somewhere and enduring a multiple spod attack in a weekend bivvie campaign.

poledark:

I really do believe that barbel stocked into a large gravel pit that is unaffected by sewage farm run off will live out there lives in complete contentment.  Of course I have no way of gauging this, but my instinct, when looking at the lovely clean, weedy, windswept stretches of water, is that ANY fish would be happy to live there.

seems more than a little naive den, surprising coming from you. different fish thrive in different environments, just because you think its a nice looking spot doesnt mean the fish will agree......

What about Gudgeon?

Should they live in stillwater?

Loved this quote :

'19. The potential for recapture is far greater in stillwaters than it is in rivers and barbel will experience increased stress when frequently caught and more so at spawning time by being unable to spawn in stillwater conditions. '

OK howcome there are so many named Barbel such as 'the traveller' then?

Barbel in rivers are taking a hammering day in day out except during the close season.

I remain neutral in the Barbel and Stillwater debate.

I feel angling has more pressing worries such as BEING BANNED by a bunch of people who dont have a clue what species lives where etc etc

I think it's often a good indicator to see what the specialist groups have to say about a species.

Without exception, one of the strongest common denominators amongst the barbel specialist groups is that they are firmly against stillwater barbel.

I also can't think of any of the top barbel anglers that hold any other position on the matter.

As the barbel is the raison d'etre for many of these people, I think it's good to take note of what they say.
