How many different rods?

Newt

Recommended Posts

Rudd has sent me another packet of UK fishing magazines and catalogs. Bless him - I think. I always lust after some of the gear even though I probably won't actually need any more stuff as long as I live. :D

But reading through the catalogs always brings questions to my mind. This time, after seeing

- carp rods

- commercial pond carp rods

- barbel rods

- match rods

- quiver tip rods

- swing tip rods (I think - catalog is at home)

- feeder rods

- and I think some others

I found myself wondering how many different types a general coarse angler in the UK would really need.

BTW - other than the carp rods, I'm not even really sure what any of those are. I fished Saturday at a location known to hold lots of small carp (up to 10-12 lbs normally) with a group that was all Brit ex-pats except for me and one other angler.

I asked one of the guys about what looked to me like a casting rod (base ring was small as were all the others and they were pretty close together). He was fishing it with a spinning reel and I was curious. He told me it was a match rod.

At any rate - and possibly of interest to any posters on here who are just getting started with angling - how many different types do you really need?

Newt,

The ones you've listed above could probably be covered by two rods, if needed.

It all depends how fussy you want to be. I use the same rods for all sorts of things, whereas others *have* to have the 'right' one.

However, what you need and what you own are two entirely different things. Like many, I have loads of different rods :D Ask Westie when he's back online - he poked his head in the place where I store them today :D

Loads Newt, well that's what I tell the other half.

Quiver tip, swing tip and feeder rods are basicaly the same thing, whereas "commercial pond" carp rods are more or less beefed up match rods.

All you need is just one baitcasting rod!!

But on top of that, if you were me, you might also own two Avon rods, four assorted float rods, one quiver tip rod, four assorted fly rods, six assorted 2 to 3 pound t/c deadbait/livebait/carp rods and eleven lure type rods. Oh, then I do have a few sea rods and a few unused cane rods!! I do, very seriously, intend to rationalise this lot and have a thorough E-Bay session!!

In reality I reckon two 12' deadbait rods for bank fishing. Two 10' deadbait rods for boat fishing. Two Avon rods for river fishing. One 12' & one 15' float rod. Six assorted lure rods and three fly rods is all I really need. The 12' deadbait rods can double up as carp rods.

And if I were really serious I might also have a selection of poles and whips.

Newt,

Drennan used to make a rod called a Tench Float Rod which not only specified which species you were permitted to catch with it but also which method you were allowed to use.

It is a fatal thing to browse fishing catalogues in a room that also contains a phone and a credit card.

I'm just trying to remember what rods I've got. Not many, these days.

An 11' JW Avon/quiver which I reckon accounts for at least 80% of my fishing.

A 13' Browning match rod which accounts for most of the other 20%.

An 11m Browning pole, which I haven't used for about two years.

A 9'/6' Silstar quivertip which has seldom been used since I bought the JW.

A spinning rod which gets occasional use for perch/chub/pike on the river.

A lovely but ridiculously fragile 11' Harrison canal rod. It weighs 4 1/8 oz and has a very delicate spliced tip. There's a design flaw in that the blank is too thin where the tip is spliced. The first tip was replaced under warranty, the second I repaired myself and cocked up; it droops very slightly. Still fishes OK though. I reckon I've used the rod maybe 10 or 15 times in 15 years.

Oh yes, forgot the beachcaster, most recent purchase, too! It's a 13' Daiwa SuperCast. Best fished with an 8oz grip lead and a hair-rigged boilie

Well, that's what it sounds like the carp boys are using, anyway...
