Umbrella woes

I've only ever bought 2 brollies in 25+ years of fishing, and they've both been cheapies from Argos! The latest one was just last season, as the previous one had finally fallen to bits. They do weigh a lot more than the expensive ones (and can be a pain when roving about) but I would still recommend them.

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music

if you think you could do without a brolly and go for a shelter then id recommend one of these http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/3250682.htm

:D

Naa, that's a 'carp shelter'! Won't be any good for anglers!!!!

Those do look good but if I remember the one's I used to have (they where a type of plastic/rubber material) they are very heavy. Deffo brilliant if your not walking to distant pegs.

On my last trip out I visited an open reservoir, admittedly it was quite windy (but I have seen worse) my Korum umbrella was pegged down at the back using the sewn in eyelets, before I had even started fishing it just folded like a pancake, the spokes have twisted spiral like, and it's now useless. I experienced other problems, mainly with the centre pole, when it was packed away it left about 2 inches sticking out, which made hard work extracting it next time out, if you left enough out to get hold of then it wouldn't go back in the bag! Also it's the type you can unscrew and re-position at the back - very fiddly.

Has anyone else had this problem? I contacted Korum and they have told me to take it back to the shop, so they can return it to them and they can check it and possibly send me another (I will give it away)

Any suggestions for a good strong alternative?

To be honest, in 40 years of fishing I’ve never found an umbrella that can cope with high winds and the problem is particularly bad on big exposed waters such as reservoirs or gravel pits. Strong winds are no respecter of cost and the pricier brollies are just s likely to blow inside out as the cheaper ones. As others have a said, you are just as well buying a cheap one from Argos as when they do blow inside out, they are less expensive to replace. On the plus side, they are lot lighter as well.

I have also used the Steadfast wavelock nu-brolly for many years without any problems even when I used to use them on the exposed banks of Wilstone reservoir in the middle of winter, they may be heavier than cheaper models but they are very reliable. I have only had to replace them 3 times in the last 40 years or so. I do own a cheaper lighweight brolly but I sometimes get a very fine mist of rain coming through it in driving rain so it's only much good in showers, but the wavelock nu-brolly is 100% waterproof and it wraps round you much more giving greater protection from the elements, and a little more resistance against blowing inside out. although they will all blow out eventually in exceptionally strong winds if you are not careful.
