My first tope!

Phew, I've been thinking that I was a jinx on myself with this species. I've been aching since the tender age of 14 to catch one of these blighters, I've read everything about them but, every time I book a trip either it's weathered off or I couldn't make it or the tope just weren't playing.

On friday 8 of us set off to Aberdovey to fish on Charlie Bartlett's "Mikatcha" a 42' interceptor. What a cracking day, the mist on the drive there burnt off slowly and, by the time we were in Aber' the sun was shining and after everything was stowed we were off.

A quick mackerel bashing session saw 3/4 of a box plus some chilled fish from the day before and an emergency stash of frozen as well.

At the first mark in 16' of water Mark had two runs in quick succession, each resulted in fish of just under 30lb. The next run was a cracker, the fish broke the surface after taking a freelined bait some 50-60 yds away from the boat and stormed off like a train. Ed, (now known as Lucky Ed) was at the controls and on his seventh ever sea fish! The first six being mackerel. This was a bit different, this, when boated was a stonking 72lb female tope!

Another mark as things went quiet and Mick took a 40lber, Pem a 30lber and then.....yes, my Avet MXL started buzzing. I picked up the MTI 15lb rod it was attached to and, as the revs increased I nailed the lever drag to strike. A quick run of about 30 yards and a lot of head shaking and the fish started coming in..............not yet! A cracking run of a goood 100yds followed by a couple of others decreasing as the fish tired and I finally brought a 38lb male fish to the boat....I couldn't stop shaking as the photos were being taken!

Not as knackered as I thought it was!

Two young anglers aboard displayed exceptional angling talent when young (10 year old) Bethany Davies equalled her PB with a 28lb fish that she hooked, played and bought to the skipper's hand with great skill. Then Luke (15) landed a 45lb fish that veteran Mick hooked for him and handed him the rod to finish the job. Mick himself had a 40lber. Just look at that sea!

Pem had a 30lber just to even things up and we all went home happy...3 tope virgins de-flowered and a club record smashed. Cheers Charlie for a great day out!

Eating wild caught fish is good for my health, reduces food miles and keeps me fit trying to catch them........it's my choice to do it, not yours to stop me!

So your no longer a virgin. Well done to you Worms and the rest of the crew. Looked at the 70 plus and that must have give him a real good tug in that shallow water. Your going to run out of specis to catch soon, nice one.

Free to choose apart from the ones where the trust poked their nose in. Common eel. tope. Bass and sea bream. All restricted.

New for 2016 TAT are the main instigators for the demise of the u k bass charter boat industry, where they went screaming off to parliament and for the first time assisting so called angling gurus set up bass take bans with the e u using rubbish exaggerated info collected by ices from anglers, they must be very proud.

Upgrade, the door has been closed with regards to anglers being linked to the e u superstate and the failed c f p. So TAT will no longer need to pay monies to the EAA anymore as that org is no longer relevant to the u k . Goodbye to the europeon anglers alliance and pathetic restrictions from the e u.

Angling is better than politics, ban politics from angling.

Consumer of bass. where is the evidence that the u k bass stock need angling trust protection. Why won't you work with your peers instead of castigating them. They have the answer.

Recipie's for mullet stew more than welcomed.

Angling sanitation trust and kent and sussex sea anglers org delete's and blocks rsa's alternative opinion on their face book site. Although they claim to rep all.

new for 2014. where is the evidence that the south coast bream stock need the angling trust? Your campaign has no evidence. Why won't you work with your peers, the inshore under tens? As opposed to alienating them? Angling trust failed big time re bait digging, even fish legal attempted to intervene and failed, all for what, nothing.

Looks like the sea angling reps have been coerced by the ifca's to compose sea angling strategy's that the ifca's at some stage will look at drafting into legislation to manage the rsa, because they like wasting tax payers money. That's without asking the rsa btw. You know who you are..

What a great day you had. The stuff that dreams are made of.

Well done on your first Tope. I bet that fit male fish gave you a real work out.

Magic.

Cheers all. Yes Steve, it went like a train, great fun on the MTI and Avet, a really nice setup that is capable of catching much bigger fish I'm sure.

Just like all the books and reports I've read but with an extra bucket of adrenaline!

I'm booked on a shark trip in June, just off down the Gym'
