Marshmellow baits

In this warmer weather im thinking of using marshmellow baits near or on the surface, 6lb mainline to the hook, with an arseley bomb and a bead in between, if you get me? So the marshmellow just floats to the surface with the casting aid of the weight. Anybody had much luck with marshmellow or this type of ledgering/float fishing??

As famous fisherman John Gierach once said "I used to like fishing because I thought it had some larger significance. Now I like fishing because it's the one thing I can think of that probably doesn't."

Not used marshmellow as bait but caught plenty of carp on bread crust on a rig similar to what you describe.

ok thanks

I had a go with marshmallow a few years ago. A local carp lake which had been prolific for taking them on the surface with dogbiscuits started to get tricky as they got bigger and kept right in the middle of the lake where I couldn't see my dogbiscuit. I read about marshmallow and got some, as I thought they'd be more visible, but when I threw in some loose offerings they never took a single one. I seem to remember that they were too light to throw, and I think I must have drifted them along on the wind.

I then tried a very easy lake and got a few takes from small carp, but nowhere near as many as on dogbiscuit and bread. Maybe it's a question of getting used to them?

I have used this method since the late 60's using bread crust suspended from an arsley bomb on or just below the surface.

I haven't used Marshmallows although I have heard of people using them.

I remember fishing crust on the surface of a Carp pool when the wind was putting quite a large ripple on the surface, my crusts were being ignored until I sank them just below the surface by giving a couple of turns on the reel handle and the Carp suddenly started taking them and I ended up taking several Carp this way while my mates didn't get any Carp to take their crusts off the surface.

I guessed that they were less suspicious of sodden crust which was slowly sinking and that was why I was catching the fish on crust submerged just below the surface. whether this was true I don't really know for sure but it seemed right and it seemed to work.

It may have worked because the Carp could see the crust better below the strong surface ripple; I don't know.

It also kept the crust out of sight from any ducks nearbye.

On our shallow estate lake we also used the older pedigree chum mixers (which used to have a sort of gelatine in them) after soaking overnight suspended off the bottom to just below the surface however casting too hard was out of the question. I don't think they make chum mixers the same way nowerdays so I think that jelly baits made with them are a thing of the past.

Tried them once and never had a bite, but to be fair I only tried them for around an hour and as I did not get a quick bite I decided to eat the rest of the packet and put on a chunk of bread crust.

The Zig-Rig, IIRC.... A great method for fishing when you don't want a controller and lots of line on the surface, just be careful of stray ducks/swans.

...Or for those of us old enough to remember......Anchored crust !! :D The Zig-rig is just a fancy name used by modern carpers to jazz up an old fashioned rig !!

I remember being taught this method back in the 1950's and I still use it at times.

As for the marshmallows I'd sooner eat them myself and give the fish bread crust or floating flake.

I used to use those little marshmellows that you get for hot chocolate. Used to put the mellow on a size 4 right up to the eye then put around 20 maggots on. Called it the medusa rig and caught a lot or carp on it in the weedy lake i was fishing at the time. it popped up and looked great
