I received this one by email - perhaps a few could help?:

hi there , i wonder if you could help me with a couple of problems i have?

Last year , 15 of us on our caravan site started a fishing club, purely for a bit of fun and to get out of the wives way for a bit.

Myself personally had not fished for some 10 years due to other commitments and so was a bit out of it to start with but overall ended up 4th in the league at the end of the year.

Now on a lot of the waters we fish boilies, hemp and groundbait are banned and i was wondering if there was an alternative to groundbait that i could use to attract fish but obviously not break the rules.

All of the angling books i have are quite old and so only mention groundbait but with this seeming to be a very common ban in the area we fish surely someone has come up with a way round this?

Is it groundbaitingi.e throwing it in loose, that is not allowed or the use of groundbait by any means?

You may get away with using it in a feeder, or squeezed around a leger weight.

Most places will let you use a feeder to introduce bait.

If it is a complete groundbait ban ie not even feeders, then I would sparingly feed pinkies or squatts for the smaller fish.

For bream, tench and carp, I would loose feed my hookbait, sweetcorn, maggot, chopped worm etc.

Its difficult to "feed off" these species.

4th out of 15, after a "slow start", doesn,t sound too bad to me.

You could try chopped worm with an additive binder as you would be able to introduce it as a "groundbait" but not break the rules. To gain extra distance with this the addition of leam will make it heavier. But make sure that you are not breaking the rules by asking the Baliff.

Leam is available at tackle shops and has no feed content. As for the additives IMO you cant go wrong with Archie Braddocks powder additives, have a look at them here.. http://www.braddocksbaits.co.uk/theadditiverange.html The link to his "Home" page is here.. http://www.braddocksbaits.co.uk/

The thing with his additives is (as you will read on his site) that some disolves slowly some a bit quicker and some not at all. Therefore there is always some attraction going on. The only feed content is the chopped worm, which will drive the fish crazy looking for food...your hookbait is the only decent mouthfull!!! :)
