Yup, but shop-around big-time before you buy, or you'll get ripped-off for sure! Even consider buying from BassPro in the States .. still cheaper even after P&P costs (and VAT + duty if you're unlucky )

I'm sure they do, but I was thinking more of the useless spoliers on the back of boy-racer GTI's. The kind that only have an effect when the car reaches 240mph

Anyway, if double handles are so useful why don't top reel manufacturers put them on all their reels?

And do you add a little weight to the front of your reels, just opposite the bail-arm, to counter the imbalance there caused by the weight of the bail-arm? And howtf you'd counter the serious imbalance caused by the pull of the line/lure/ledger beats me.

I wouldn't mind a tenner bet that double reel handles have no useful effect whatsoever under realistic fishing conditions. Anyone know a friendly professor of mechanical engineering?

Absolutely. I was looking at that very reel last night. I had an excellent bit of advice yesterday because I was looking into getting a baitcasting outfit. I was put me onto the BassPro shop and they are spot on with pricing. I've started ordering loads of stuff from the States. They still beat us hands down on pricing and with the pound being strong......well the maths is the simple bit and I don't mind waiting a little longer.

Actually aerodynamics start to come into play around 75 mph

And, back to reels, if you look inside the rotors of balanced reels (e.g. Shimanos), you will see that they do indeed have small counter-balancing weights that do indeed counterbalance the imbalance of the bail-arm and roller etc

Steer-clear of Cabela's though .. they rob you 40% of the cost of the goods, for shipping. Considering shipping costs are determined by weight, they are taking the hiss

Well, the Technical Director of the motor-racing Team ( see here) with whom I'm involved is good enough for me (with an Hons Degree in Mech Eng )

Gasp !! But that's above the national speed limit ! :D

I was only having a bit of fun with the 'spoiler' comment DG, but I did see a Top Gear that put something like an Escort GTI - with spoiler - into a wind tunnel and they found that the spoiler had no use below 200+ mph. On truly high-performance cars they're obviously vital assuming you need to reach high enough speeds for the spoiler effect to kick-in.

But the real point I was getting at is that loads of go-faster gimmicks on all sorts of equipment are designed more to attract the buyer than to serve any real purpose.

That's exactly the answer I'd like, too? Maybe a good one to put directly to Shimano, the Patent-holders.

In the meantime, this is what they say about the various technical features of some of their reels:

Shimano Double Handle

Reels fitted with this feature are more balanced and faster to spring into action (no fumbling for the reel handle when a fish grabs your bait!). The balancing effect of the Double Handle also prevents the reel from winding itself backwards (drop back) when the anti-reverse is disengaged.

Shimano Dyna-Balance

Dyna Balance - a feature that at the time of its introduction dramatically reduced reel wobble and continues to do so today. A reel fitted with Dyna Balance feels 'tighter' and performs more smoothly, making it a pleasure to use.

Shimano Fightin' Drag

Fightin' Drag is a secondary drag system that can be used to control hard-fighting specimen sized fish.

And, Glenn, I'm not banging a drum for double-handled reels ... I said that I prefer them and asked the question of Members of this Forum their views .... PRO, CON, neutral ..don't care ... never used one etc
