A red letter day...for me anyway!

Just thought I'd share my Friday afternoon's experience with you if you don't mind?

I'd managed to pop down to my local Warwickshire Avon water to try for some barbel that I'd heard reports of being caught in this currently milder weather. The weather was pretty filthy with steady drizzle being blown in on a blustery wind and my resolve wasn't great when after an hour I'd not had a touch. The river was up a few feet and pushing through.

I decided to head back towards the car and en-route decided to try a spot that had produced some chublets in the past. I'd only got my barbel rod with me and felt a little over gunned (8lb mainline!) but nevertheless didn't want to go home fishless.

I stuck a big piece of flake onto my size 6 hook and lobbed it towards an obvious crease, close to the nearside bank.

My one and only bite of the afternoon (to cut a long story short) was a positive one, but by no means a clonker, and I struck into a fish.

First impressions were that it was a smaller fish making a good account of itself in the strong current but the continued bend in my rod gave me hope. I soon cast eyes on a nice chub which I successfully landed.

Gave it a weigh in the net, 5lb 3oz!! My biggest Warwickshire Avon chub by about a clear pound. Delighted!!

I realise that by a lot of you guys and gals standards this isn't really that big but it's by far the biggest chub I've seen, especially from the Warwickshire Avon.

Thanks for listening!!

JP

It would be a red letter day for me too JP. Chub of any size have a habit of putting a big smile on your face and a 5lb 3oz specimen is something to be proud of. Well done!

It's never a 'six', let's put it back

Hi Jp

what other people catch from other waters depends on what fish are there. They may have loads of 6 or 7lb fish in front of them.

What you have caught is a fantastic chub by any standards.

The method you used and the watercraft you have learn't to place the bait where you did is invaluable and will catch you bigger still.

Keep at it my friend

regards

John

Congratulations on an excellent catch, one to be proud of and the first of many I hope, also most excellent use of watercraft and guts in braving the weather.

Keep it up well done.

JP,

You braved weather on a day when most people would be at home watching TV, you used watercraft to fish in the spot that would give you the best chance of a bite on the day, and you fished the bait that tempted probably the biggest chub in the swim. It's a fish you should be proud of and a fish that alot of anglers dream of.

Well done!

I don't think there are that many rivers where a 5lb 3oz chub wouldn't be a good fish and by the sound of it, its a cracker for the Warwickshire Avon. Location plays a big part when considering how good a fish is. So well done for some great angling JP.
