Fishing with tinned meat

I do a similar thing with a biro spring and screw the meat on.

I spent a pleasant afternoon on the Upper Lea today trotting maggots on the centrepin. As darkness fell I switched to quiver tipped lumps of tinned spam.

 

Perhaps because I am a touch ham fisted and also because it was dark, I found hooking the spam quite tricky and often lost any that I did hook up when casting.

 

Is there a brand of tinned meat which works particularly well as a hook bait?

 

Are there brands which work better than spam or should I persevere with spam and find I have a bit more luck with it next time I use it...especially if I can see what I’m doing...

 

Not had this problem myself, but here are some suggestions

 

Cut the spam into long strips and flash fry them, the either break into cube type shapes or attach it in full or half lengths - a bit like worms

 

Alternative air dry the spam

 

mash the spam up with soft white sliced bread it then molds easily and stays on the hook pretty well although I only ever use barbless hooks

Cut the spring in half and slip it onto the shank of a hook and superglue in place. Ideal for fishing sloppy pastes.

Out here in France they sell a particularly evil smelling cat food for about 80p a large tin, it is half inch meat cubes in a jelly. I mix it in with ground bait and also use it on the hook. I fish mainly in the margins so casting isn't a problem, as it is moist I use a baiting needle to hook the cubes. I push the needle through the cube, catch the hook on the baiting needle's little barb, then pull it gently back through the cube, release the needle and turn the hook before pulling on the line to draw the hook back up into the cube, it stays on fine and seems to attract the larger fish, smelly cat food is a deadly bait.

No don't be ridiculous but I do still ask for my Doner to be fried on the hot plate to make it nice and crispy
