I did the last evening of prebaiting yesterday, a smaller amount and now in a relatively tight area. Tonight, we fish :)

After the baiting I had another evening quivertipping bread hoping for a decent roach. It was a bit of a disaster really, it was really windy which made bite detection tricky, and as it was an upstream wind and the flow is so weak at the moment, the Thames was actually flowing backwards. Not ideal... I managed a few small roach and some skimmers, which was OK. I did see a large bream croaking it on the surface (presumably a spawning casualty), it was a really good fish, must have been at least 7lb. I wonder how big they go in the Thames?

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music

Yup, but with no success. I missed with my first shot, and the string on my bow broke before I could take a second shot. :(

John.

12 bore's a lot easier mate and the resulting bloody groundbait is great for eel fishing!

Eating wild caught fish is good for my health, reduces food miles and keeps me fit trying to catch them........it's my choice to do it, not yours to stop me!

After all of this talk of river carp I had to dust of my carp rods and get out on the bank. I went for an exploration session last night and actually had a carp on the end of my line and it was a big fish. Unfortunately it had not been hooked by my hook some other angler had hooked the fish and then snapped of leave it to trail around 30 yards of line which I then got tangled up with leavening me to reel the fish in. Were the line hand wrapped round my lead, I could not reel my line in any more so hand to try and hand line the 30 yards of line, that was attached to the carp. Got the fish right to the bank and the hook pulled leavening me with a death rig. A three once fixed inline lead and a hair rig which was very neatly tied but no fish. I will be back later on in the week to see if I could hook one properly or find out whos line it was an have words.

Blank!

A few lessons learned though - 1. Tigers are 100% crayproof. Even after 6 hours in the water, they came back without a scratch. 2. Boilies are not crayproof! After half an hour they were very nibbled, after a few hours they were gone. 3. Double hookbaits on quite long hairs appear to be bream and chub-proof. A few times I had what looked like the start of a bite from a fish, but they never developed. 4. The Thames is a wonderful place to be in summer at dusk, with the sun glowing red behind the trees, the little fish dimpling on the surface, and the barn owls hunting over the meadows. It looks even more amazing once the sun has set and an enormous white moon appears, bathing everything in bright white light.

I'll have another go tonight, more in hope than expectation - I think really you'd need a proper campaign to do it justice and I don't want to do that, so hopefully I'll have a little luck instead!

After that, I think I can hear the big Thames perch calling. I think the new mission will be a Thames 3lber before the chub fishing starts...

This has got me thinking as tigers are crayproof would barbel also take them?

I have had Barbel on tiggers, it would not be my first choice of bait for them but does give another option if crays don't like them.

Final evening of the mini campaign, and I just couldn't munster up the enthusiasm to even try! In the end I went roach fishing instead

I think I enjoyed the planning and the baiting up more than the actual fishing to be honest. I don't think I have enough desire to catch one.

The roach fishing was a let-down too, I walked a very long way to a spot I know where a side stream runs in, in the hope of actually finding some flow. But that too was static. I caught a few small roach and a couple of dace, but then got bullied out by a load of cows that were trying to eat some of my gear (my chair is covered in cow-gob) and were threatening to tread on the rest.

Once again, despite trying to prove otherwise, I have to conclude that it is a winter river, and I will just have to be patient.
