Apart from the obvious limitations of the tackle, (that he fails to mention), none of the links would open for me.

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

Nice write up, good for non-anglers to be able to read about the better side of fishing for once.

Quill floats ? I did a thread on how to make them some years back

Hazel pole ? Not the best native wood for the job - hazel has little taper and is therefore akin to using a broom handle.

Rowan (aka Mountain Ash, aka Yggdrasil) is lighter, has a nice taper, and lasts for years.

Its all been written up before

I've used Willow as a rod (or what we would now call a whip) before, and no I didn't forget my rods again. The float was a bit of twig held onto the line with float rubbers, 3lb mainline and 2lb hooklength. Caught a few good roach and perch on that

Yes, willow, like rowan, has a reasonable natural taper and retains its springiness for years.

The old-fashioned valve-rubber for cycle tyre valves makes a good float rubber for thin floats. Dunno if its still available as such, but I have about three lifetime's supply left, stored in a tobacco tin with a dusting of French Chalk, it is still unperished after sixty years!

All,

River Willow (not sure of a scientific name) is still a staple in the midwest US fishing arsenal. Never much more than 4 meters they are the closest thing we have to "pole" fishing. That's what we call them "willow poles". They are used to run pole lines for big river fish.

The regulations are: "If you use more than 3 poles (or two poles on the Mississippi River) at any one time, the additional poles must be labeled with your full name and address. Regardless of the method or number of poles, you may not use more than a total of 33 hooks at any one time."

Most guys will fresh cut 20 poles and run them frequently but they MUST be run twice every 24 hours. They're usually about 30 meters apart and that becomes the anglers "swim". Believe it or not, there are a LOT of C&R pole fishermen.

They are planted in the mud bank and there are any number of ways to safely secure them.
