EA seize illegal eel nets

Good news, but its a pity the EA did not set a "trap" of their own, and nab the illegal eelers rather than just their nets.

So, a licence costs £10 and a net costs £100.

There appears to be no qualifications needed to get a licence, they even helpfully post the address to apply to.

Why do I think that something is wrong here.

I don't think enough people realise the key role that eels play in the whole aquatic eco-system and the food chain. I think all species (except cormorants) deserve respect, the fishy species anyway :D I learned quite abit about eels from this article so others may find it useful too. The Club for Eels and Eel-fishers is here

It seems to me that a lot of numbskulls kill and eat what they catch, and then grizzle about the lack of fish in their venues  ... they're obviously from the planet Thick

The article linked in DG's post stated Eel ages up to 20 yr old. There is an authenticated case of an Eel kept as a pet in europe somewhere of 80+ yrs!!

If my memory serves me right, the late great John Sidley had a large Eel checked for age using the Otilith bones. This is an accurate aging method & came up with an age of 70 yrs.

Obviously large Eels can also be of a great age, perhaps far older than their captor.

They need to go back alive!

Peter.

Dear 'Diamond Geezer'

The eel chappies ain't forgotten your input.....thanks for all your support whenever the eel issues are raised.

Anthony......leading from the front again my man.....knew the substitution would be a good one....keep the good work going. (see you next Saturday night/Sunday morning.)

Leon......as ever, thanks for keeping your eyes peeled and for the support.

Vagabond......Agree entirely but it's like taking on the mafia when you go direct at the eelnetters....the EA need some courage of conviction, and support from some power source like the police, if they are scared of the treatment that could be handed out to them on the bankside.

Cranfield.....It's crackers.....it bewilders us as well.

Peter......the eel was estimated at 69 years old. As you say, all eels should be returned alive. Thanks for expressing that thought on here with such understanding.

The eel has, in the past, been much maligned and the victim of ignorance......it is reasurring to see a slight change of thought process towards Anguilla anguilla in the angling arena of late....long may that change of attitude continue.

Yours With Respect......

Steve.
