Groundbait substitutes

Some things are definitely more expensive in France, and groundbait is one of them. (4ml pellet at 4.59 euro for 700Gm) Ordinary Sensas groundbait around the same price.

CC Moor now have a centre here but they are not much cheaper at 4.50Kg for pellet plus delivery.

One of my favourites in the UK was Vitalin dog food, and I bought 3 bags with me but that is running low so I am looking for suggestions of things that I can buy cheaply from the animal foods counter.

layers mash and layers pellets any good?

sheep?goat pellets I believe are not dissimilar to CSL pellet

I can get pigeon mix and other grains such as maize

I am having problems finding hempseed. I can buy it mail order but the cost of delivery is prohibitive.

How about dry dog food put through a food processor?

Anything else I should be trying?

I don't want to go out and buy 25kg sacks and find it doesn't work ;)

Layers pellet is good, I use it for bream fishing as part of a groundbait/pellet mix. They sink fairly quickly and break down very quickly, providing a nice carpet of bait that clouds up once fish start to feed. They have a reasonable protein content but aren't filling.

A friend has used either sheep or goat pellets (can't remember) with very good results, again as part of a pellet mix for bream and tench.

Another one from the farm shops is wheat. Very cheap indeed and fish really like it. I've used it as part of a particle mix for tench, and a friend has caught roach using it. Go easy on it though, it is very filling and easy to over-feed. Easy to flavour too, even if it's just adding some sugar while boiling.

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music

Just to add that Layers Mash is very good used in conjunction with bread crumb.

Problem is that I can't get breadcrumb

I used to get bulk bags of groundbait at Decathlon for around €4.00 for 2kg, is this no longer the case?

Thanks Tony

We don't have a store near us so driving just to get it would not be cost effective.

Next time I go to Le Mans though I will check it out :)

Easy to make, if you can source stale bread cheaply.

All of the local stale bread supplies are long since spoken for, otherwise I would.

Sportsman,

The "secret" "best" ground bait is from Aldi's (do you have Aldi's?). They, and only they, have a CAT food that is 23% protein made from fishmeal that SINKS. It doesn't have the additive necessary for a healthy cat diet. It is in the blue bag, not the gold bag which does have the "health" additive. Small pellets, I'd say about 8 - 10 mm.

In the whole of the United States I've not been able to find a dog food that sinks without grinding and re-constituting.

The second best source of cheap, but high quality, groundbait is your nearest horse race track. They have oats in combination with other rolled grains as coarse pellets that are in several forms and are super. My favorite, although not sure why, is one with several amino acids added along with molasses (it is red in color). Race horse diets are almost as "fiddly" as carp baits, and I suppose course fish baits as well. Arab trainers use the most exotic try those trainers first. Maybe exotic is why I like them?? Often they will just "give" you a kilo or two to try out. Problem here is they will not reveil the contents or their sources.

They become much more "relaxed" if you tell them the purpose of your request. For fishing, not for analysis for another stable.
