If using trebles then the same as Brian with the hooks pointing away from the head but if using a single hook or two singles then the opposite with the fish hooked in the head as its better for casting and keeping the bait on.

So how complicated do we want this to get?

 

Well Budgie, all I was looking for was some general advise. But now it seems this could evolve into a nice discussion. I have over many years dead & live baited for pike, with baits from minnows upto whole herring or mackerel. The results weren't that impressive, so I asked the question to see if my method was right or wrong. Still not decided. Iwill admit having many times in the past, lost the bait while casting or most of it. Often been left with the head staying & body to tail flying in a different direction. So there bids another question:- Does it always have to be a complete fish used as a deadbait? Eels & lamprey are sectioned, mackerel are sometimes used as 'flappers' ( half filleted with spine removed) to attract more results. So in answer to your question Budgie, I don't know as deadbaiting can be a wide subject. We should let this thread flow & as predator season now it seems very apt to do so. In short lets see where it goes.

You've seen my point Mark! When you start looking at different rigs/presentations/baits even types of venue etc etc it can easily become a far more deeper question!

 

I don't really know whether the best way to answer this is to just give various examples of the previously mentioned variables and the correct (IMO) answers or whether to just keep it very basic or even to just explain why you should/need to take all of these things into account when deciding! Maybe a bit of a ramble through all aspects would be best and people can just pick out what they need or discuss anything they wish?

Mark just a quick one when you say your results haven't been that impressive can you be more precise? ie does the bait keep coming off? do you get bites but miss them? or do you get bites,hook them then the fish comes off? or just no bites/fish full stop?

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

One of my favourite baits is Sardine but it is very soft and comes off the hook easily when casting.

What I do now is to use PVA mesh. I make a bag with the sardine in and then wind the PVA round the hook a couple of times. It holds it just long enough to cast. You have to be quick and make sure that the sardine is as dry as you can get it or it dissolves the mesh. ;)

Elastic bands are a much cheaper (and reusable) alternative. Better also to cast out when the bait is still frozen.

 

And Rich is right, it's not predator season everywhere :rolleyes:

Over the years most would apply, but mostly the problem is the bait 'twisting up' on the snap tackle. I have tried putting a shot on the wire infront of the rear hook to stop it sliding up & twisting the fish. This doea appear to have solved the problem. The other problem is bait seperation during casting, so I now stick to frozen baits & leaving them alone for as long as possible.
