Wingham during the winter...

I was just wondering if any of the Wingham members fish it during the winter months, maybe target the roach etc ? It seems that the place never gets a mention in winter, is that because no one fishes there at this time of the year ?

Pretty much nobody fishes once the Tench have spawned apart from a few who chase the Bream.

Some where talking about fishing for Perch and Roach over the Winter but not sure anybody's actually done it as yet.

So basically most people are buying a membership to just do several months tench fishing

If I was a member i'd be targetting other species now, surely there's some clonkin roach and rudd in there that would be well worth a little effort ?

I have fished it in the winter before - it is absolutely rock hard. It would be an interesting challenge for a local but I live too far away and have too many other productive winter plans to bang my head against that particular brick wall!

It can be a difficult and moody lake at the best of times, in the winter you can times that by x100. I'd much rather be chub fishing :)

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music

It's a pity no one lives close enough to have a serious dabble at the roach, I bet now would be a good time as they would most likely be one of the few species at the table, appart from esox of course.

That's about right once the Tench have spawned very few of the Coarse syndicate fish the coarse lake. Steve has allways tried to promote the fishing after June because of this but very few do.

The Roach fishing is very strange as until around mid June you really struggle to catch them then its alive with Roach,Rudd and small Perch.Big bags are easily put together on float fished maggot......but not long after September you can't buy a bite!

The numbers of carp anglers who fish on the Carp lake (and the handful who are allowed to carp fish on the coarse lake) also drops in the winter proper but we still see them out and not a nigh on total disappearance!

In fact this is so much so that a new ticketing system is going to be used in coming years.I'm not at liberty to give the details (basically as they are not 100% formalised yet) but I'm sure when Steve gets the time he will inform people, certainly via the Wingham website if not here as well.

Another reason that the numbers drop so much on the Coarse lake are simply that most of the members are all round specimen hunters so are fishing for others species and so on other waters at later times of the year. Its a shame more don't put time in for the big perch though but as Anderoo mentioned its a long drive for many so if they have good perching on their doorstep its daft them wasting their fuel money. I'm relatively close at Ashford but I still limit my Winter trips to coincide with bailiff duties/socials as well.

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

That'll be interesting Budgie, Wingham is a very special place and I did consider putting my name down but after an e-mail exchange with Steve I couldn't justify the cost. None of the ticket options worked for me given the distance I'd have to travel. I'm in a similar position to Anderoo (except that I don't like bream), I'd only travel to fish somewhere that offers something I don't have here so to me that means big spring/summer tench.

It's never a 'six', let's put it back

I have done the odd winter trip but like others the distance involved puts me off as I tend to view Wingham as a session water and bivy up for two or three nights. I have found it hard work but did manage the odd small Tench around 6 lb (Well small for Wingham). Only been a member for a couple of years and did have good intentions of winter fishing for Perch and Roach but I struggle to get a bite from the Roach once they seem to disappear. I got quiet excited back in February when I caught a good number of small Roach while Tench fishing but that was the last I saw of them until late summer.

Next year I am hoping to spend more time "Not Tench Fishing" and trying to catch some of Winghams other fish but doubt I will be doing any Winter fishing. I find it very hard at the back end of the year and so would rather be fishing for other species much nearer home, hopefully catching more and saving a few quid on petrol. I have seen some big Rudd, well I think there where Rudd but could have been Roach at Wingham but as yet have failed to catch one.

Stephen

Down almost entirely to the long distances most of us live from the lake, I suspect. Once the tench have spawned I've already used up a load of annual leave, paid a load of money in petrol and the other costs you get with 2-4 day sessions, and had enough of static motorways to see me through to next spring  Then once the few summer and autumn bream sessions are done, it's actually kind of a relief to not have to do that journey again for 6 months, plus I've then run out of annual leave

It's hard work and expensive for us 'out of towners'! Not that I'm complaining, but that's the reality of living so far away and working full time.

I've seen the rudd too - big fish. Not many in the little group I saw, but they were rolling over a shallow bar at dusk one summer's evening a couple of years ago, and were clearly impressive fish. I wouldn't like to put a number on them. I had the bream rods out though, and daren't risk the disturbance by trying to catch one.
