You will never catch on Sea Baits

That is the point Hawk for something they do not eat they have learned to like and show a preference for it. The only way this can happen is at these sorts of venues with discards and pre baiting. Any way very few people belief it and even less then I thought. Makes no difference to me one way or another. Not sure what you think is sad about it Hawk, it's no different to using bread, corn, hemp, pellets and boiles all unnatural baits that fish have learned to accept as a food source.

Fishing sea baits for the OBH zander could prove more difficult now they've tipped an extra 80 pike into the lake: http://www.gofishing.co.uk/Angling-Times/S...stocking-boost/

Yeah had a few on my last trip, very small but very well marked. So I thought they must be new stock as the OBH Pike are a washed out colour and not very nice fish to catch.

As in all styles of fishing, it a confidence thing, Rigs, bait etc....

I have been using a bait for two years now in conjunction with a cage feeder and have some cracking catches of Zander on it, yet my mate...not John lol.....will not use the rig or the bait. He feels that the feeder could be picked up by a preditor and the rig is then lost...it has not happened in the two years I have been using the rig/bait.

My mate says he is confident in his rigs that he has used for god knows how many years, I would say he is stuck in his ways!! The catches prove it!!

Another mate swears by mackerel, yet I have not seen him catch on it and he has always struggled when I have fished with him, but he sticks at it....why?

I feel you have to keep an opened mind and to try different ways to improve catches whether it is different rigs, swims, sea baits, live baits, dead baits etc... It works

Sounds like another load of poor pike that will suffer..... anyone like to take bets with me that all these recently introduced fish will soon turn into pipe cleaners and NONE will put weight on?

I dont like seeing pike killed but do sometimes have to ask myself if they would be better off dead than suffer as most trans located pike do?

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

Agreed Dale, Even the Zander are a bit washed out. The Pike in OBH are the worst looking pike I have ever come across. There was a pike we always caught. It was a pike I really wanted to knock on the head as I actually felt sorry for it. Both eyes were manky almost white and the colour was almost white and it had soars all over it. It kept being caught time after time. Some of the other pike were too in fact all of them if they were ever caught. But then I caught more Zander than pike and as Dale said they are not easy to catch down there.

It sounds like what I said in another thread that Zander have been wiping out the Pike and I can bet that they have had Pike put in there loads of times. The Pike just do not grow in there but they used too when I was a kid and they were fine specimens too.

Perhaps Budgie with his degree/skills in water management can comment on this but I honestly can say that over 40 years as a regular and that is one hell of a long time the health of the fish have deterioted dramatically. Bream, Tench the lot. Winding in a Pike that looks like it has leprosy, manky and soars on it really puts you off and this fish was no more than 10LB max. The biggest pike I ever had was when I was 13 and that was a 24lb 6oz. That was in 1974/75 that is a very long time ago. Since then I have never had anything bigger than a 12lber. In fact my Double zander was just below that and my best a few Oz higher. There are few Perch in there too. And this is odd because in the other too there are loads of them.

The other lakes the fish are fine on the complex the fish look good. They are not jaded and are healthy. So what is it about that main lake ?

PS...Dale you have fished it for the last few years i bet so maybe i am wrong and things have changed?

The main reason is simply the change in habitat/water quality. Most pike stocked over the years into OBH have come from trout reservoirs. They simply dont adapt. Not just OBH by the way this is the case with most waters.

But surely Budgie some trout waters can't be that healthy? Are you talking more about the change of diet. I have notice the vast amount of worms that had been on the zander in OBH that you never or few on the Fens. i know this is because they must have been lying on the bottom but i have never caught so many fish with literally stacks of them on the fish.

i think i better stop as i might be open to slander on here

I am actually very fond of the place as it has been my fishing life which is why i am so concerned about it!

Trout RESERVOIRS not WATERS mate! A big difference. But that said even the most scummy of commercial put and take trout waters need to have a higher quality than other waters.......else the trout would die!

Certainly clear water pits with a high level of prey fish are the better bet for re located TR pike but even then its extremely rare (I have never personally witnessed one successful transfer but have been told of a couple). But a lot of the time (well in my experience of transferring TR trout) the reason the water they are going to in the first place wants them is that it doesn't produce them itself so that kind of tells a story doesn't it?!

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!
